Recently, I was inspired by a talk from Benedictine Father Boniface Hicks, who shared a pivotal moment in his conversion story. A friend guided him through the first chapter of Genesis, revealing that Adam and Eve were created for a purpose. He then turned to Father Boniface and said, “God made you for a purpose, too.” Moments like this ignite the heart.

Understanding and purifying desires is crucial for making impactful decisions on the leadership journey. This path requires developing self-awareness and aligning personal desires with a greater, God-given purpose. Here’s a guide to navigating this inspiring journey.

  • Create Space for Silence.

In our busy lives, we should carve out time for silence. This quiet space allows for reflection to reveal the deepest longings of your heart. Incorporating silence into your routine nurtures your understanding of what truly drives you. In this stillness, engage in a loving conversation with God, our Father, who created you for this purpose and will awaken it within you.

  • Purify Desires Through Prayer and Reflection.

Regular prayer and self-reflection are vital tools for aligning your desires with the will of God. This practice aids discernment of whether your desires resonate with a greater need or purpose. This sometimes means embracing a higher calling that challenges your initial inclinations.

  • Reflect on the Longevity of Desires.

Recognize that not all desires hold equal weight. Some are fleeting, while others leave a lasting impact. Observe patterns in your desires over time to distinguish the two. Before acting on a desire, consider waiting to see if it endures, as you discern the will of God. Patience can illuminate which desires are genuinely worth pursuing.

Exercise caution in acting impulsively without reflecting on the long-term significance. Those desires that initially seem challenging or uncomfortable may ultimately lead to profound personal growth and fulfillment.

  • Commit to Growth and Self-Knowledge.

Effective leadership demands a steadfast commitment to continuous growth, prayer and self-awareness. Strive to understand and purify your desires. This dedication enhances your leadership capabilities and nurtures personal fulfillment.

To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one’s heart, with all one’s soul and with all one’s efforts; from this it comes about that love is kept whole and uncorrupted (through temperance). No misfortune can disturb it (and this is fortitude). It obeys only (God) (and this is justice), and is careful in discerning things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence). | St. Augustine

Practical Tips for Unlocking Your Deepest Desires

1. Clarify Your Vision. Spend time in conversation with God about what truly matters to you, asking him for his vision and purpose for your life. Write down your deepest desires to give them form and clarity, making them easier to pursue.

2. Create a Supportive Environment. Surround yourself with positive influences and supportive people. Share your desires with trusted friends, spiritual directors or mentors who can encourage and hold you accountable.

3. Embrace Challenges. Pursuing desires that align with a greater purpose can lead to personal and professional growth, even if they present obstacles.

By following these steps, you can make impactful leadership decisions. This journey of self-awareness and growth is vital for anyone aspiring to lead with integrity and purpose.
