Actress Jennifer Lawrence on Having Kids: ‘They’ve Opened Up the World To Me’

'It’s almost like feeling like a blister or something. So sensitive. So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively.'

Typically not one to open up about her personal life, actress Jennifer Lawrence caught the eye of many this week as she spoke from the heart about having children from the stage of the Cannes Film Festival.

During a press briefing Wednesday about her current film, Die, My Love, the actress was asked this question:

"Considering that ego is a big part of an actor’s career, and you’ve been in the spotlight for a long time, how did the birth of the children change your perspective on your career and about what is really important in life?”

Lawrence, who just welcomed her second child into the world, spoke passionately about this new role of motherhood:

“Having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible. Not only do they go into every decision of, if I’m working, where I’m working, when I’m working…they’ve taught me. … I didn’t know that I could feel so much."

Feelings and catharsis are nothing new to the world of acting, and Jennifer Lawrence, known for her role in The Hunger Games and her Oscar-winning performance in Silver Linings Playbook, has always exhibited quite a depth of emotion. But she is now experiencing so much more.

“My job has a lot to do with emotion, and they’ve opened up the world to me," Lawrence continued. "It’s almost like feeling like a blister or something. So sensitive. So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively.”

The actress who was five-months pregnant during the filming of her current movie with Robert Pattinson and Sissy Spacek, spoke fondly of her newfound role as mother telling the audience: “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor."

Oddly enough, the new film she was promoting when she gave this now-viral speech paints a different picture of motherhood. Lawrence portrays a new mother alongside her co-star Pattinson as father who is riddled with postpartum depression. Apparently the character ends up going crazy. I am not sure if the film is worth seeing, but I prefer Lawrence's real-life reaction to becoming a mother than the book-inspired flick.

Live Action's Lila Rose invited Aaron Kheriaty on her podcast to discuss the message and they both agreed on how much becoming a parent does change one for the better, "because you care about the next generation," Kheriaty pointed out. The father of five says his life is much better as a parent. and has made him a "better doctor."

"But I was especially edified to hear her [Lawrence] say this because the message to so many, and especially so many young women is: career first, children are going to get in the way... and she acknowledged, I do make career decisions now based on my children because they are actually more important to me than my next role."

And it's actually helped her — "opened up a world to me" — as the actress put it. Lawrence's take on motherhood is so refreshing in this world where many consider parenting to be a "burden" as mother-to-three Lila Rose said on her podcast.

"I'd love to see more media headlines celebrating mothers who value their children," Rose commented to Kheriaty. And hopefully, these glimmers of light even coming from Hollywood will help us all build and proclaim a culture of life where every baby is celebrated.
