May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Though such dedication dates back centuries, it was formalized in the 18th century, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia.

In 1945, Pope Pius XII solidified May as a Marian month. Pope Pius created the feast of the Queenship of Mary to be celebrated on May 31, anchoring the month to her (though that feast was later moved to Aug. 22). Devotions to honor Mary in May remain among the faithful.
