Why Did Jesus Descend into HELL? And More!

Monday, February 27, 2012 1:04 AM Comments (13)

Why does the Apostles Creed say that Jesus descended into Hell? Why would he do this? Wasn’t the Crucifixion enough? Did he have to suffer even more?

What did he do while he was “down there”? Did he preach to the dead? Which dead? Why? Do we have a second chance at salvation after death? What did the Church Fathers say about this? How about the teaching of the Church today?

Why does the Law of Moses say not to wear clothes made from two kinds of fibers? Can we wear cotton/polyesther blends? What’s the reason for this commandment? Who was bound by it? Does the commandment really forbid mixing any two types of fiber? Should we take this literally?

These are just some of the questions we answer in this week’s episode of the Jimmy Akin Podcast!

In the future, please list technical information (techno difficulties, costs, time constraints, upcoming publications, etc.) in text form and not the podcast. And keep it brief, too. It’s annoying to have to fast forward past uninteresting drivel to get to the good religious material.

Is there any way for a transcript to be printed along with the podcast? I much prefer to read rather than listen.
Thanks.

lauermar, thank you for your post, I agree.  If not for reading your post I would have turned it off thinking I had the wrong podcast….Get right to the point, Jimmy!

Would love to have a transcript of the podcast published. I’m not much on listening to podcasts, but would love to read it! Basically if it’s not printed, I won’t get the information.

In total agreement with Susan L Parker: a published transcript would be most helpful.  I can read it at my convenience and take the time to study those parts that may not be so clear.

I love to read your column but do not enjoy listening.

Babble babble babble jimmy boy please hurry up and get to the point Im wasting time on my office desk listening to advertisements.

I agree as well. I would much enjoy having a written transcription of this in order to peruse it when I’m offline.

May I have a transcript of this? Thanks

I would love to listen to this but don’t have the time or the ability.  If this were printed I could read it when I am able.

Is there a way to see the written version?

God bless!

Some of you are demonstrating a rather unflattering sense of entitlement. The podcast is free. Don’t listen or hit the fast-forward button, but either way, please spare us the complaints about how much of a burden it is for you.

To all those requesting a transcript, listen to the first 5 minutes where Jimmy addresses this. If you’re physically unable to listen: the gist is that transcription costs money, and again, the podcast is free. If you want transcripts, you can, as the saying goes, put your money where your mouth is.

Wow, that was a nice summary. It is also comforting to know the church fathers and great theologians of our church have written on this subject in general agreemenet and in alignment with the Catechism of The Catholic Church. I just wish we would hear a little more during the Sunday homily. Please pray for our priests.

I too can’t listen to the podcast so I just tried to search for an article about this from a Catholic website. Here it is.

Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant pastor or seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith. Eventually, he was compelled in conscience to enter the Catholic Church, which he did in 1992. His conversion story, "A Triumph and a Tragedy," is published in Surprised by Truth. Besides being an author, Jimmy is a Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a contributing editor to This Rock magazine, and a weekly guest on "Catholic Answers Live."
