For or Against the Faith?

Publisher's Note

As our page-one story illustrates, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is taking heat from California politicians over his requirement that educators in archdiocesan schools do not publicly in word or deed contradict Catholic teaching.

How ironic it is that secular forces seem bent on trying to tell the Church how to govern itself, when that same secularism has led to many of the societal ills we are faced with today — breakdown of the family, redefinition of marriage and the disappearance of what used to be called “the common good.”

Archbishop Cordileone boils it down perfectly when, in a letter to his political detractors (all of them Democrat in this instance), he asks, “Would you hire a campaign manager who advocates policies contrary to those that you stand for and who shows disrespect toward you and the Democratic Party in general? On the other hand, if you knew a brilliant campaign manager who, although a Republican, was willing to work for you and not speak or act in public contrary to you or your party, would you hire such a person?”

The answer seems pretty straightforward to me. How about you?

God bless you!
