My Favorite Catholic Media Things

Let’s get Catholic Media Promotion Day kicked off in a big way. Choosing your favorite Catholic media sites is kind of like choosing which of your children is your favorite.

Try, if you can, to imagine me singing in a falsetto … “Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles, brown paper packages tied up with strings ... these are a few of my favorite Catholic media things.”

2 Catholic Blogs
Catholic Herald’s Morning Catholic Must Reads – I’ve blogged about it before, but the U.K.‘s Catholic Herald editor Luke Coppen pulls together a daily list of Catholic news stories that are as addicting as a morning cup of coffee.

Chiesa – Italian Sandro Magister is the Vaticanista of the Vaticanistas.

3 Catholic Podcasts
Catholic in a Small Town - Since I’m Catholic and live in a small town, I cannot resist Mac and Katherine’s Catholic in a Small Town. It’s home-spun and down-to-earth.

Word on Fire- So, this isn’t strictly a podcast, but Father Robert Barron’s audio and video content and homilies are well worth the time. I especially enjoy Father Barron’s take on popular culture.

EWTN Podcasts – For the EWTN junkie who just can’t get enough ... EWTN’s programs are available via podcast, so even if you don’t have access to EWTN via television, this is a great way to access their libraries of content.

4 Other Random Catholic Media
Kresta in the Afternoon Radio Show – Al Kresta is the godfather of Catholic radio. Truly, Al’s years of experience and his skills as a journalist and broadcaster make him a Catholic radio pioneer and a superb interviewer. I always enjoy listening to his show.

GetReligion – So, GetReligion isn’t strictly Catholic, but this must-read blog takes a look at how religion, in general, is covered by the secular media. Hands-down, this is my favorite blog. It always has insights and analysis that you won’t find anywhere else. Their tagline is: “The press ... just doesn’t get religion.”

NewAdvent.org – Not only does NewAdvent have access to the comprehensive online Catholic Encyclopedia, which was entirely transcribed by volunteers, but it is also a great Catholic news aggregation site.

PewSitter.com – The Catholic Drudge. Need I say more?

My Own Projects
Now that the National Catholic Register and EWTN are one as EWTN News, Inc., I cannot fail to mention the combined power of the world’s largest religious network and their respective comprehensive websites.

You can find a link to all six of my books here.

Finally, I am currently working on updating the Catholic college and university profiles in the Cardinal Newman Society’s “Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.” Prayers for their completion would be deeply appreciated.

Four German Bishops Resist Push to Install Permanent ‘Synodal Council’

Given the Vatican’s repeated interventions against the German process, the bishops said they would instead look to the Synod of Bishops in Rome. Meanwhile, on Monday, German diocesan bishops approved the statutes for a synodal committee; and there are reports that the synodal committee will meet again in June.

Palestinian Christians celebrate Easter Sunday Mass at Holy Family Church in Gaza City on March 31, amid the ongoing battles Israel and the Hamas militant group.

People Explain ‘Why I Go to Mass’

‘Why go to Mass on Sundays? It is not enough to answer that it is a precept of the Church. … We Christians need to participate in Sunday Mass because only with the grace of Jesus, with his living presence in us and among us, can we put into practice his commandment, and thus be his credible witnesses.’ —Pope Francis
