Poll: Marriage Initiative Leads

There’s more good news today for defenders of marriage in California.

A new poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus shows a widening lead for supporters of Proposition 8, which would amend the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

The poll, conducted by the Marist College Institute of Public Opinion between Sept. 28- Oct. 5, found the Yes side leading 52%-43% among likely voters.

That finding confirms another recent poll that reported the Yes side has erased the early lead held by opponents of Proposition 8.

Support for the constitutional amendment, which would invalidate last spring’s California Supreme Court decision legalizing homosexual “marriage,” is broad-based. The Yes side was ahead in the poll in every region of the state except the San Francisco area.

According to the poll, Proposition 8 also holds majority support among men (53%), women (51%), whites (51%), Latinos (57%), married people (59%) and voters aged 45 and older (59%).
