Sharon Lee Giganti got wrapped up in the New Age movement. Seeing the damage she did led her back to the Catholic faith of her childhood.

SAN DIEGO — A decade ago, Sharon Lee Giganti was “on the fence” between her New Age beliefs and Christianity. She had not only been a New Age follower, but a teacher and counselor, so her roots in New Age were deep.

Then she received the horrifying news that her 31-year-old brother had murdered his 4-month-old son. According to the prosecutors, who would later secure a conviction and life sentence for her brother, he had suffocated the child to get back at his teenage girlfriend for rejecting his marriage proposal. According to Giganti, he had long been an abuser of drugs and alcohol and murdered the child in a “deluded” state.

The event devastated the family and was especially painful to Giganti, as she believes her New Age beliefs contributed to the atrocity.

“I didn’t believe in sin or evil, and I told my parents not to worry about him,” she recalled. “I told them it was only our negative thoughts and feelings that led to negative outcomes.”

Giganti was born in 1961 and grew up in San Diego. She attended Catholic grade school, but graduated with little knowledge of or interest in the Catholic faith. By the time she was an adult, she was thoroughly secular and viewed her parents’ beliefs about right and wrong as “their morality.” In fact, when she made moral choices to which her parents objected, she was puzzled by their disapproval. She reflected, “At the time, there was nothing firm or objective on which I formed my conscience.”

At 21, she won the title of Miss San Diego County and was a runner-up for Miss California, which is part of the Miss USA/Miss Universe pageant. The pageant judge suggested she pursue an acting career in Hollywood, so she moved to the Los Angeles area. Giganti (then Sharon Lee Jones) began landing parts in the late 1980s into the 1990s. Some were roles on popular television programs, including Wings, Night Court and Murder, She Wrote. She also earned bigger roles in two children’s movies, Leapin’ Leprechauns and Josh Kirby … Time Warrior. Her career was well on its way.

As an attractive young woman in the entertainment industry, she was often pressured into taking parts which required her to remove her clothes. She resisted most such offers and was distressed by this aspect of Hollywood. She was also puzzled by her own reaction: “If I had no moral standards, why was I crying about it?”

It was also in Hollywood that she was introduced to the New Age. Such views were prevalent in the entertainment industry, she says.

Oprah’s Platform

In his book Catholics and the New Age, Jesuit Father Mitch Pacwa defines New Age as “a loosely structured, eclectic movement based on experiences of monism [a belief in the oneness of everything] that leads people to believe in pantheism [everything that exists is divine], with a tendency to hold millenarian views of history [expectation of a new age to begin].”

New Age practitioners may engage in the meditation techniques of Hinduism, Zen, Sufism and Indian religions, mixed with humanistic psychology, Western occultism and spiritualist interpretations of modern physics. Others may make use of crystals, rebirthing experiences and sensory deprivation. Hallucinogenic drugs, yoga, Sufi dancing or breathing exercises may be used in an attempt to reach an altered state of consciousness.

Sometimes Catholics dabble in elements of New Age, such as astrology, the enneagram, reiki and channeling. Father Pacwa, the host of EWTN Live on the Eternal Word Television Network, admits that in his youth he engaged in New Age practices, which he today rejects.

He continued, “In general, New Age fads are attempts to awaken the so-called ‘divine energy’ within each person. When a particular method does not work, you search for the next, knowing that eventually you will find the one which will awaken your divinity.”

Despite her success in Hollywood, Giganti was depressed. She found Hollywood lonely and bleak — and a difficult place to make healthy choices. She reflected, “I was hungering for God, and I didn’t realize it.”

A friend gave her some New Age books and tapes, including Helen Schucman’s A Course in Miracles and Esther Hicks’ Law of Attraction. Schucman claimed her material was dictated to her by an inner voice, which she said was Jesus; Hicks claims to channel a group of non-physical entities called Abraham. According to Hicks’ Law of Attraction, negative thoughts lead to negative outcomes and positive thoughts lead to positive outcomes (hence Giganti’s advice to her family about her brother).

To a group of struggling young actors, such beliefs are appealing, Giganti explained: “If you create your own reality, when you go to an audition and really want a part and believe you’re the best, you’ll get it. There is nothing you can’t achieve.”

She continued, “But that’s simply not true. You can’t make your own reality, and there are some things that are beyond your control.”

Many Hollywood films and television shows have New Age themes, Giganti noted, and prominent media personalities have promoted the false teachings of the New Age. Giganti has taped an audio CD, for example, on how Oprah Winfrey has used her media empire to provide a platform for New Age gurus.

Experiences with Death

But by the mid-1990s, Giganti had become so imbued with New Age philosophies that she abandoned acting for her “higher calling” of becoming a New Age teacher and counselor. It wasn’t long, however, before she recognized the devastating consequences of her teachings.
One young woman who came to her for advice, whom she calls Tia, was a single mother with a host of problems, including drug, alcohol and gambling addictions, as well as mental-health problems. Among her vices, Tia enjoyed gambling after work. Her children, one as young as three, would be left home alone while she gambled away what little money the family had.

Giganti introduced Tia to Hicks’ Law of Attraction. Giganti recalled, “I told her that while she was out gambling to visualize that her family would be fine, and they would.”

Tia wound up leaving her family for weeks at a time, going broke, losing her home and children, and finally being committed to a mental hospital.

Even more tragic is the story of Jane, a suicide-minded student who came to Giganti for help. The girl asked, “Is suicide wrong?”

Giganti: “Only if you think it is.”

“Will I go to hell?”

Giganti: “There is no such place.”

“Will my family be devastated?”

Giganti: “Only if you think they will.”

Giganti was frustrated with Jane’s “religious conditioning,” and quoting Abraham assured her “you are free to attract anything you desire, even death.” Giganti suggested they “see what the universe thinks,” and took out her runestones, which are similar to tarot cards and an occult practice. The ivory-colored tiles bear images that have various meanings. Giganti pulled out the death tile. An upset Jane responded, “I don’t want to do this anymore.”

Jane checked into a hotel room the following day and killed herself.

Giganti remembers not seeing Jane as a person, but merely as a vibration and energy. She concluded, “The New Age movement had robbed me of my empathy.”

Giganti began studying the Bible and believing in objective truth and morality, but clung to her New Age beliefs as well. It was learning of her brother’s murder of her young nephew that “knocked her off the fence.”

She became a self-described Bible Christian and returned to the Catholic Church through the influence of childhood friend Lisa O’Neill. O’Neill recalled, “My husband, Damian, and I worked on her and prayed that the Holy Spirit would work through us to reach her.”

They encouraged her to go to Mass with them and go to confession. O’Neill continued, “That little visit really paid off, because Sharon is now on fire.”

Today, Giganti is a catechist and a professed member of the Holy Family Institute, a secular institute that helps families cultivate holiness through marriage and family life. She and her husband, Frank, have a 7-year-old daughter.

Her current projects include work on a new book, Off Center: Hidden Dangers of the Centering Prayer Movement. She also maintains a website and recently joined the Catholic Answers speakers bureau. She is featured monthly on the Catholic Answers Live radio show, where she speaks out against the New Age. She concluded, “A Course in Miracles, Law of Attraction and other such beliefs lead to death and devastation. I’ve seen it. I thank God for leading me out of this darkness, and now I want to help lead others into the light.”

Guess Jesus was wrong too when he said “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them]” Mark 11:24.  How did she put it, “But that’s simply not true. You can’t make your own reality, and there are some things that are beyond your control.” Glad she corrected Jesus there too. All hail Sharon! She knows more than Jesus!

In John 14:6 Jesus said to His apostles, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me”.  Further in John 3:16, Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  Trust in God through His Son Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and believe in him as you become a witness to his goodness, his words and everything will be alright.  I did, and I now am happy counting my blessings and at peace in my spirit as I lift up everything to him after doing my best, and pray that God’s will be done.

Giganti is a poor example to use as an example of the dangers of New Age thinking. Her advice to her clients, as quoted in this piece, amounts to nothing more than a bunch of garbage. If what is presented here is to represent her beliefs about New Age thinking or the law of attraction, then I have to say that she is so far off base that it is no wonder that she struggled. She gave bad advice and now regrets it. She had no idea what she was talking about. I hope she is better versed (and holds better beliefs) if she is truly serious about leading people to the light!

I would recommend reading the following books that had been recommended to me…  These books along with Fred & Miriam, Rocio & Juan Rojas,  lead me to become Catholic. I ended up also living in a Trappist Cistercian monastery for a couple of years not long after conversion.

Thank you Matthew, for this article and Giganti.  I’ve had similar experiences that I’d like to share:

The Voiceless Cry!  -  In the Age of Today

About thirty years ago, I began reading the Bible. I read it from the beginning to the end and in-between, and I haven’t yet finished reading it.

Back then, in my late twenties, none of my closest friends cared to openly exchange Bible scriptures or parables with me; when it was all that my blind longing wanted to discern.  I was led to most every book on religion or spirituality that was on the top of the best selling list for the next two decades or more - while studying the Bible, attending seminars, and supporting these books as well.  It seemed as though the latest books were the ones that I could easily relate to with those around me - especially those with stories that gave examples with current affairs of today.  Also, the authors seemed to be along the same persona of appearance that I could resonate with.  Although I reflected back with parables or scriptures that Jesus spoke - I needed more than Church alone.  I felt for certain that every author, as well, was aware of these truths in scripture.  But for all those years, I couldn’t ‘see’ that the mention of His name was a voiceless cry in my heart and wasn’t the ‘only’ mention in some of the books that I read.

Nevertheless, as many years have gone by, another veil was lifted.  I truly believe that this is the purpose that I soulfully searched through that voiceless cry: Freedom of Religion!  Just this past year, I began to see that I was scattered all over the place; all because I didn’t want to offend anyone!  While not quite falling for everything and, yet, ‘standing’ for nothing.  I began to see this as a blessing of free will for me to serve the one and only Jesus Christ.

While quietly active with my Christian faith, I noticed through the seminars and lectures and even in most of the books that the authors were certainly supporting their spiritual/religious beliefs with quotes throughout the entire pages, programs, and presentations.  I also noticed that the other attendees that I become acquainted with at the seminars, were Christians, who have left their church and religious beliefs and were ‘yet’ supporting another spirituality/religion but not their own?!  This opened my eyes to seeing and hearing their voiceless cry, with compassion, as a reflection of mine.  As much as the lecturers on stage preached that “We are all One and the same to God!” they continuously lectured through-out the entire program with their found spiritual truths that supported their religious heritage!  Which were all well and good, but were every other religion than that of my own?  Wow!  What a miraculous insight this was for me.  This was the last seminar that I attended that left me with the greatest gift of freedom and certainty for the first time in my whole life of soul searching with religion!  I’ll never forget that day at the seminar when the speaker asked that we close our eyes in prayer, and instead of chanting the words that they presented and staying fixed on a little ball of light in my mind’s eye, I prayed to Jesus Christ and thanked Him for setting me free!  I was completely free from that day on to serve the One and Only Christian faith that I belong to.

The speakers and authors were simply praising and honoring the central foundations of their spiritual/religious ancestry; which truly strengthens and glorifies our prayers in gratitude to God.  In all truth, they showed me the way to mine! I realized that I needed to read all those glorious books that truly helped me to find the key to my Church alone. The prisoner that kept me captive was only I.  The greatest freedom for me is making a mention of His name wherever I am.  And, oh, what peace I have found sitting in the highly polished natural wooden pew of my beautiful Church, with familiar faces, praying, singing, kneeling, and worshiping God, with the reflection of light shinning through the majestic stain glass windows, and a Sermon presented by my Pastor that truly lifts souls nearer to God -  Is freedom that is comprehensible and that no other can surpass.

And the most authentic spirit of holiness is that it came upon bended knees and respect with every religion; that I found the One True Catholic Church that fits and keeps me!

@ Jim Graves: Thank you very much Jim Graves and Giganti for your blessed and ‘much needed’ post. I’m sorry that I didn’t make a mention of your name in my last comment.

Truly,
Catherine Nagle

If she were a licensed counselor and gave that advice to a suicidal client, she could be criminally charged and civilly sued.  Her New Age beliefs led her to fail to take the most basic care of another human being—as any “Reasonable Person” would.  (Reasonable Person being the legal construct juries would consider in making their decision.)  Meaning, the New Age made her abandon reason.  Even an ethical atheist wouldn’t be so callous.

@Bob: she is now leading people to the light—read the Gospel of John, Chapter 1.  The New Age, practiced poorly or well, still leads souls to the one who can appear as an angel of light, who was a liar and murderer from the beginning.

@Ty—the health and wealth gospel is not the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is dangerous and makes people lose their faith, when they are blamed for their own illness or poverty, despite their vigorous faith, heartfelt prayers, and earnest efforts for things to be otherwise.  Emmanuel means God with us—in all things, even poverty and sickness.  (In fact, those things can be blessings in drawing us closer to God.)  You can keep your false gospel and Santa-god.  I will help the people that false gospel hurts and bind up their wounds in the name of Jesus Christ.

There is a fundamental difference between tunning our human will to the mistery of God’s will for each one of us than using the mind as creative magnet to impose our own self-centered reality. Either someone loves God or is against Him, and to be with God is to love His Incarnated Word and follow His ordered path of perfection. The universal truth of the ages was already revealed and its reality continues among us in the Church sacraments. I am afraid of those who follow the advice of know-all gurus who seek hidden spirits to gain an all powerful divine consciousness. The blinding sin of pride points to the unnamed who won’t serve God from the beginning!

I have listened to the Abraham-Hicks “Law of Attraction” recordings and, also, have seen the Secret Film.  There is NOWHERE in those recordings that state to do anything negative to one’s self such as suicide.  They are positive recordings that feature information on believing in yourself, using mind over matter to obtain achievements in one’s life such as obtaining employment and other things.  Yes, it is very “ID” for someone to not ask God for help, but this may work for some, such as making a dream board, to help to focus on things one may want to achieve.

This Giganti woman obviously was an absolute QUACK and should have been thrown in jail for malpractice for encouraging a woman to commit suicide and another for child neglect and to fully embrace her addiction to gambling. She also does not sound very educated and is absolutely lacking in comprehension skills.

How in the world did she establish a practice legally? What kind of person or counselor for that matter would incourage such negative behavior.  As a counselor, you are suppose to HELP a person with their problems and help them to discover POSITIVE and HEALTHY choices of change in their behavior.

I can only imagine how she actually interprets what she sees when reading the bible.

@Jim Graves,

Thank you so much for this article!

I know SO MANY otherwise good Catholics/Christians that participate yoga, reike, and other New Age practices.  When I try to have a conversation with them about it, they think I’ve lost my mind!

We also had a visiting Priest come, and his entire homily was instructions on New Age Centering prayer that he proudly announced he had learned from the Dahli Lahma himself (ie, chant a montra until your mind empties itself, etc.)

People in the parish LOVED his homily!  When I expressed concern, I was told by other “pewsitters” “oh, how can you say that?  He has such a beautiful spiritualy about him.”

THANK YOU for shedding much needed light on this topic!

Deceitiful Mysticism:
http://www.perfectpeaceplan.com/peacemedia.html

I, also, have listened to the entire set of “Abraham” tapes, read two of their books and attended one of Jerry and Esther Hicks’ talks - because my ex-nun, New Age sister gently forced them on me and I trusted her judgment. Although the law of attraction, etc. seems to have a lot going for it, I couldn’t help but notice that Jesus’ name was never directly used.  God was always referred to as “the Universe”.  It wasn’t until the second to last tape that I picked up on the teachings that are contrary to the Catholic Church - the ones that essentially say every man for himself - if someone is having a bad life, we are not supposed to interfere because that is what they have attracted to themselves.  These New Age teachings are danger of the worst kind - they teach you to depend totally on yourself, rather than on God - pure heresy.

It all began in Church:  A lost soul longing for a way to find some peace and understanding in God.  I was raised Catholic and grew up with many friends who were Protestant, Baptist, and Jewish, etc.  I feel blessed for my upbringing that taught me that we are one and the same to God, and there was never to be a comparison with one over another. But even after much reading, study, and prayer, I still continued to find myself in a whirlpool following other Christians?  I was reading daily scriptures and having the hardest time with my life that led me to search other teachings.  Even though on the inside, I was most comfortable with the teaching that gave references to Jesus.  So, I remained with an open heart and mind to what else that I can know because of my beloved mother’s strong words of council and ‘fairness’.

I was very excited to hear about spirituality coming from all the media; not only from Church.  I felt as though it was a sure sign.  I was passionate talking openly about the word of God in daily conversations.  A great and wonderful change of oneness has come!  So, I thought.

As my studying continued, it brought me to A Course in Miracles, (a study course for the foundation for inner peace) and an Emmet Fox book Sermon on the Mount, which led me to the full collection of his library.  I felt they were spreading the same messages as Jesus.  I could always pick up the Bible and see the same references that felt true to my heart and soul.  Some of my family and Catholic friends warned me to stay away from anything that wasn’t Catholic Doctrine!  I couldn’t understand this?  Couldn’t they see that I was healing!  So I continued with my search even further.  I didn’t understand that being saved through Jesus was the only way?!  My heart cried out for the children all over the world who didn’t have the opportunity, resources, church, books, or even the knowledge of reading to know God or the teachings of Jesus?!  This led me to short visits to another church that I didn’t feel comfortable with - that kept me even closer to the Bible and my own Catholic Church.

I was excited when I read the book The Secret and joined an online community because I felt for sure that everyone that reads the Bible would truly understand that the law of attraction has been written a long time ago for us through the Gospel.  We were only too young and immature to understand the meaning and cause of suffering, forgiveness, sin, repentance, and our complete dependence on God.  I continued to keep an open mind and not judge as I faithfully followed lessons and teachings that led me back to the Bible references and Jesus words, again.

As much as I gave every consideration, time, effort, resources, to every other religion - I continued to hear blame on the Catholic Church, which bothered me dearly!  That I am re- inspired with all my heart and soul even more with my Christian faith.  The willingness to stay open minded to all religious teachings only seemed to greet me back half way.  But the Catholic Church doors remained open and Whole.  As so did my heart with ‘only’ the mention of His name, Jesus.

The revolution is that I made a complete circle to where I never closed the door behind me in the first place.  As for the children that I have mentioned without resources or knowledge to read – they have been my greatest reason for soul searching that led me to stretch myself, read, and learn everything that I can about the perfect word of God.

We are the angels that God has placed before them, that we may ‘keep open’ the windows of our soul in His house,  ‘and live His way,’ that will lead others to the Catholic Church.

Who is Fr. Richard Rohr? I read that he will be speaking at the Religious
Education Congress in Los Angeles in March. It says he is known for “eclectic theology” and “eco-spirituality”. I have no idea of the meaning
of these terms. Could this be New Age stuff?? He also uses something called the “enneagram”, what is this?? Is this a Catholic priest?

Please help!  Robert.

Teddy:
You are right; she WAS a quack for doing this. You miss the entire point; these beliefs are leading people - who know no better - down a path to hell. She took these teachings and passed them on. Do you wonder why we are seeing more teen suicides, for instance, when Hollyweird is promoting everything BUT Christianity? Why we put someone in jail for killing a dog — a practice I don’t promote in any way — but celebrate the death of children through abortion and make it a right above all other rights? That people are having themselves sterilized and even committing suicide to “save the planet?” This is serious because it has made its way into the Church.
Ty:
If you think New Age teaching is the same as Christ’s, wow! Christ also says “seek ye first the Kingdom of God ...” and then all these things will be added. We are to subject our wills to His. Far different than saying you bring it about on your own power; you are god.

@robert ferrez

I don’t know who Fr. Rohr is, but based on your description, I’d stay far, far away!

I’d also contact my bishop with the information, to make sure he is aware of what is going on in his diocese.

—-Yes, I solely agree with the deterioration of morals through what HOLLYWIERD feeds poeple these days…I, myself, Don’t even watch Network TV…

I do not feel the “New Age” teachings is the same as Jesus’—nor is it the same of the Kabala, Judism or Budhism—But you can learn to become a better person and can learn to me more spiritual from other inter-faith—intepretations.  To be the type of person to think that your are better than someone, such a jew becuase you are Catholic is a very snotty—and not a very Christian additude.  Jesus came to us to heal “the lost sheep”.

The problem with this Sharon Lee Giganti woman was she led poeple down a very dark path with information she certainly didn’t correctly comprehend.  And that is sad, indeed!

“Hate the sin, Love the sinner”

Teddy:
Agreed with Sharon and her former path. Maybe she comprehended it all too well; hopefully, she is doing reparation for what she did, like we all need to in some form or another. The problem with the Kabbala and other fashionable “religions” these days is it takes people away from Christ. Do we really believe that someone like Madonna — or Esther, as she is now “known” — is truly interested in bringing about a return to any sense of morality? Kabbala — they claim it came down from Mt. Sinai from Moses but I don’t think it has anything to do with real Judaism —  seems to me a way to couch their immoral behavior in “religious” language. Same thing with the New Age; it’s “religious” language that tells us we are the arbiters of right and wrong. Buddhism has its own problems. Unfortunately, we Catholics have a great responsibility to live out our faith and we — yes, me — don’t do it. We need as much healing as everyone else; we need to be willing to help others realize that.

I don’t understand all of the Bible….but there is a part that says….“Beware of those who slander other people for their own gain”...........something like that. Those who speak lies…My question is if a person claims to believe in an all knowing God would he also not KNOW if that person is being truthful…? Just asking. Peace.
Terry

Ty Lee confuses prayer to God with wishful thinking! Did anybody else catch that? Fro the record:Prayer is “a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2558).
God bless!

I also have problems with Centering Prayer! I don’t think you can define it as “a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God”. Centering Prayer seems to be self-centered prayer! What does focusing on a holy word or mantra in your own mind leads to, but towards your own self-consciousness, etc.!? I don’t see how it could lead to the Person of Jesus, even if your holy word is the Name of Jesus who is above all other names, you are left with an idea or a mental notion of Jesus, maybe only accidentally the real living Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today and always.

I am thrilled that Ms. Giganti has found her way back to the Catholic Church.  She obviously had a gross misunderstanding of the very fundamentals of “the New Age Movement”.  In my heart I hold her personally accountable for Jane’s death and the destructive advice she gave to Tia.  I hope someone INTELLIGENT explains the Catholic religion slowly and precisely so that Ms. Giganti understands (perhaps someone who teaches small children who is patient asks Ms. Giganti to verbally explain scriptures with others present in order to avoid further gross misunderstanding).  Also, for the love of God and Jesus, I hope the Catholic community forbids her from providing counseling to any human beings of any religious backgroun.  She has proven to be incapable of understanding and transmitting the tenets of the belief systems she aligns herself with.
