When former Senator Rick Santorum was campaigning in New Hampshire earlier this week, a disgusting thing occurred on the campus of a local Catholic college.
But it’s one that I think is highlights the disconnect between those who advance a culture of life and those who preach so-called tolerance.
As Santorum was leaving the podium following a Rivier College event the day before the New Hampshire primary one anonymous questioner barked one of the most disgusting questions I’ve ever heard asked of a presidential candidate.
Someone asked Santorum: “Would you abort a gay baby?” Here’s the shocking video:
Santorum, as you can see, simply rolled his eyes and continued on his way. But you can hear the gasp from a number of people there. That’s a proper reaction. This question is especially offensive given recent history in that the Santorum’s grief over their dead child has become a focal point of the left who obviously see it as a disqualifier for public office. Both liberal pundit Alan Colmes and Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Eugene Robinson attacked the Santorum’s on how they handled the death of their child.
But even the premise of the question should disturb anyone. Life isn’t just life for many people. For too many, life needs to be adorned with descriptors to judge whether a life is worth living. For too many, the value of a human life is subject to a cost benefit analysis.
There’s nothing a child could do or be or suffer from to make me want to kill them. Could that questioner say the same thing? I wonder if that questioner were asked whether they’d kill a gay down syndrome baby. Hmmm…decisions decisions. Gay? Good. Down Syndrome? Bad. Hmmm…
For pro-lifers like Santorum, adjectives don’t define the value of a human life. No matter how many classifications and sub-classifications you ascribe to a human being, they are a human being.
This nasty incident follows on the heels of a debate where Santorum was asked on national television how he’d react if one of his sons told him he was gay.
“I’d love him as much as I did the second before he said it,” was Santorum’s response.
I guess some just don’t understand that kind of love.

I havn’t seen any proof of a ‘gay’ gene from the scientists. I personally believe a person can be born with any host of ‘ailments’. I also believe many come as a result of all the chemicals and so-called medicine that man puts into their bodies. If a person is born with homosexual tendicies I see as no more than any other problems one must deal with. Autism, blindness or any physical defect. It is a cross one must bear. We may never know why until we meet God face to face. I wonder, how would they know if a baby is gay while still in the womb? Wouldn’t this compare to mental capacity as well. Are we to abort a baby if isn’t an Einstein? Abortion is one of the most selfish acts there is.It would be more honorable to give the baby up for adoption.
Exceptional words, “...adjectives don’t define the value of a human life. No matter how many classifications and sub-classifications you ascribe to a human being, they are a human being.” Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I wonder how this could be tweaked, so pro-aborts can’t dismiss it? Meaning, they don’t see a baby in the womb as “human life,” so how could the message hit them even more?
The bottom line is that homosexuality is a mental disorder caused mainly by parenting (or lack thereof) and early environment. (www.narth.org) You are no more born gay than you are born speaking english or spanish or chinese.
The fact that someone would ask this question- wow, seriously disturbing on many levels.
Actually, I think it is a great question to pose to progressives who normally support abortion and the gay lifestyle. Hypothetically, “if” scientists were able to identify a “gay” gene, would they still support a woman’s “absolute right” to abort? They don’t seem to have any objection to the use of abortion for other lifestyle goals ..
Whether or not there’s a “gay gene” or someone is “born” (conceived?) gay isn’t the point of the question. It’s a “gotcha” question, designed to see if the mean old evil conservative Catholic is more anti-gay than he is anti-abortion. I like Santorum’s response (eye roll and keep walking). What pro-lifer, no matter how he or she feels about homosexuality, would answer yes to that question? He could, however, have turned the question around, and asked “would you support a woman’s right to abort a child just because he’s gay?” Make them decide which they value more, gay “rights” or abortion “rights”.
The practice of LUST as a lifestyle is abhorent because it denies the immortal soul of a person endowed with unalienable rights to life. The practice of the VIRTUE of LOVE, charity, as a lifestyle is called for by Jesus Christ and is called Religion, endorsed by our Constitution as FREEDOM. The question was most bigoted, hypocritical and slanderous, seeking to splash mud on Santorum. It is time the mud must be splashed back, as Jesus used mud to open the eyes of the blind man. Matthew Archbold’s question: “There’s nothing a child could do or be or suffer from to make me want to kill them. Could that questioner say the same thing?” to rephrase: There is nothing a CHILD OF GOD could do….
I agree with Ellen, the question was to see how much Santorum “hates” gays. People just don’t get it. They think if you see that that gay lifestyle is wrong that means that you hate gay people and think they should die. This is where we are as people now.
How can the Catholic Church/Santorum claim to not hate Gay people? They encourage the spread of AIDS through opposition to same sex safer sex education (which targets the 99.999999% of Gay men who are not lifelong celibates). They advocate discrimination and demonization of Gay persons, thus encouraging non-frank discussions with medical professionals. They both advocate making Gay monogamy illegal, thus encouraging promiscuity. Santorum supports the legality of throwing all Gay men into jailcamps for the ‘crime’ of being Gay. So does the Roman Catholic Church (at the highest levels), who publiically calls for gay persons in Nigeria to be jailed for up to 14 years for the ‘crime’ of being Gay.
Tom, the Catholic Church really doesn’t hate gay people. It isn’t hate at all. If anything, it’s all about love. We want what is best for everyone. We don’t encourage the spread of AIDS; in fact, the opposite is true. We actually know the cure for AIDS—not having sex or sharing a needle with someone who had AIDS. So too with all sexually transmitted diseases. We don’t advocate demonization of gay persons, and we absolutely discourage promiscuity. The truth is quite the opposite: we simply say that having sex outside of a male/female, married, monogamous relationship is wrong and there are consequences for doing otherwise: sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS being just one of them. Would you please send the site where Santorum advocates throwing gay men in jail/camp. Can you also send the site for the Catholic Church calling for the jailing of gays in Nigeria?
@Tom in Lazybrook: WHERE do you get your “information?” This is quite probably the most convoluted accusation I’ve ever heard!!
What an asinine question. And good for Santorum for not even getting sucked into a useless argument.
This poor deluded Tom is making it up as he goes along. This video is so sad, but it highlights further Sen. Santorum’s virtue and grace, and the need for him to be a leader in our country. I know there is little hope for his nomination, but while there is still a chance, we have to help him try. And it starts and ends with prayer.
From the Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference Website. http://www.cbcn-ng.org/newsdetail.php?tab=27 Also, reported prominently in the Nigerian Mass Media and Lifesite news. The law may be named a ‘same sex marriage ban’, but in reality the law demands a 14 year prison sentence for all Gays. It demands throwing straight pastors and persons in prison for up to 10 years for even holding or attending a private same sex marriage ceremony. It bans the freedoms of due process, association, expression, privacy, assembly, petition, speech, press, RELIGION (there are pro-Gay denominations in Nigeria - which will be made illegal by the Catholic supported law), and existance. You might also wish to see the Catholic Bishop of Belize support criminalization of Gay persons in that country. These are radical laypersons, these are the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in these nations.
Since after 35 years or research science announced last year that there is no gay gene spotting a gay child is not possible because they are not in fact born that way.The little leftish should understand that pro life people would not abort anyone but they should be asking their fellow leftist who do believe in abortion since they abort for less reasons than that one.

Tom that is a huge leap from not condoning a sinful behavior damned in the Bible to calling it “hate”.It is not hate. I hate no one but I don’t have to approve of every perverse behavior that is my right.
Maura, your church advocates firing us from our jobs (even if those jobs are paid for with our tax dollars), and wants to make our relationships illegal. That is hate, IMHO. With regards to HIV/AIDS, the response of the church appears to be….‘follow our religious laws (even if you aren’t Catholic) or we will frustrate efforts to keep you alive’. I have never seen a valid response from the current Catholic leadership to the issue of HIV/AIDS education/prevention among persons that aren’t Catholic. Safer sex education works in saving lives. So does monogamy. 99.999999% of men (Gay or straight) are not going to be lifelong celibates. Therefore, the Catholic Church should have a response to the 99.99999% of Gay men who are not lifelong celebates. Currently, it is…we’re gonna fight any rational mitigation efforts. And by the way, I’m not talking about the Roman Catholic Church’s religious doctrine, I’m talking about its POLITICAL doctrine as applied to non-Catholics. Thank God many Catholics just ignore their Bishops. Sometimes, being pro-life means actually taking reality into account.
CCC,
How many years should I receive in a Nigerian or Belizian Prison for the ‘crime’ of being Gay in order to see your ‘not hate’?
Maura,
While I gave you one link (signed by an Archbishop and a Bishop on the offical website of the Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference no less), I did forget to address Mr. Santorum’s advocacy of the criminalization of Gay persons. I can provide you as many links as you wish showing Mr. Santorum’s anger and opposition to the court ruling in Lawrence v Texas decriminalizing Gay people. He has introduced no legislation in his 12 years in the Senate to decriminalize Gay persons and is on the record opposing the decriminalization. I think his position is obvious. If you need a core dump of links, I can provide them. And you really don’t even want to get me started with Catholic Advocacy groups at the United Nations either. Perhaps it might be better if people in the “Orthodox” Catholic worldview really stopped and thought about exactly what their religious leadership is advocating and its implication on the lives of non-Catholic LGBT persons in the world.
As the poster Ellen mentioned earlier, this sounds like a “gotcha” question so the media could potentially use it against him.
Tom, first of all, according to statistics from other countries that have legalized gay marriage “monogamy is not a central feature for many” (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/us/29sfmetro.html). Furthermore, while many gay people want the right marry they don’t tend to marry in lower numbers than straights yet have a similar or higher divorce rate. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divorce_of_same-sex_couples)
I didn’t see where the Nigerian bishops were advocating (at the link you gave) the imprisonment of gay people. They were celebrating the fact that the Nigerian government was not allowing itself to be blackmailed into legalizing gay marriage, which not only goes against the teachings of the Church but the will of the Nigerian people, which has Christians and Muslims in about equal in numbers.
As for sex education from non-Catholics, I recommend the book “You’re Teaching My Child What?” by Dr. Miriam Grossman (Jewish) who talks about all of the scientific health information that is often left out of sex education problems, especially regarding the dangers of anal sex (for gays and straights) and the effectiveness of condoms (which is lower when used for anal sex). And lets look at Uganda which has decreased its AIDS rates since using an abstinence-only campaign. (http://www.azibopress.org/?p=627)
As for others discussing a “gay gene”, there has not as far as I know been any gay gene found. However, some neurologist suspect that abnormal hormone levels may effect fetal brain development leading some people to be born with same-sex attraction. (There have been measurable brain differences between straight men and some homosexual men.) However, adolescent brains go through radical changes, again due to the increased hormone levels of puberty, and sexual abuse may also rewire the brain towards homosexual attraction. (See Michael Gurian’s “The Wonder of Boys”) So, while it may not be genetic, there are indications that there are bio-chemical/neurological components.
Hey, Tom in Lazybrook. Thanks for your comments. I apologize for my co-religionists who are here attacking you. Catholicism is not monolithic, and you have visited here the site of a particular expression of Catholicism (the Register used to be owned by the Legionaries of Christ, founded by the notorious pedophile and hypocrite Maciel, and is now owned by the Republican Catholic media outlet EWTN.) Not all Roman Catholics in good standing and who practice Catholicism would say the hateful or illogical or unreasonable or uncharitable things being said to you here. (I’ll be told by these same folks now that I am not a Catholic is good standing, that I don’t really practice my faith and so on. As if they have the authority to determine either the state of my soul or my canonical status! That’s OK. I’ll offer my holy communion for them this Sunday.) I hadn’t known the situation in Nigeria. Thanks for alerting us to this. There are Catholic parishes and Catholic ministries that would welcome you and your questions, accept your indictments and work to heal the wounds they create. I belong to such a parish, actually. I hope you find
@Tom: so many years of the UN providing condoms is africa has NOT slowed the spread of AIDS. the ONLY thing that will stop it, it abstinence.
Catholics don’t hate anyone, we are ALL sinners, but we also believe in Truth - Universal Truth - and feel it is our mission to stand up for that Truth and proclaim it boldly. I would feel the same about a hetero couple living together before marriage as I would a same-sex couple.
Stating the FACT that homosexuality is PHYSICALLY different from hetero relationships is NOT hate.
Just so were all clear here. Following is the text of the bill fully endorsed by the Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference (signed by the Archbishop of Ibadan and another Nigerian Bishop). The fact that the Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference endorsed the bill has been all over the Nigerian mass media for weeks, without any clarification or comment observable on the streets of Nigeria. It is not credible to think that The Nigerian Catholic Bishops Conference is certainly aware of the content of the bill. Nigerian Senate votes for draconian anti-gay law
posted by Peter Tatchell on Wed, 30/11/2011 - 12:00
Same-sex marriage and civil unions to be banned
14 years jail for participants, 10 years jail for helpers & witnesses
Gay advocacy groups & same-sex public affection to be outlawed
Sweeping criminalisation contravenes Article 42 of the Nigerian constitution
The Nigerian Senate voted on Tuesday 29 November to criminalise same-sex marriages and civil unions, with penalties of up to 14 years jail for participants and 10 years jail for anyone who helps or witnesses such a marriage or union.
In addition, the scope of the bill has been dramatically widened. It now also criminalises gay organisations and advocacy groups, and public expressions of same-sex affection. These newly added offences carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
The bill has been sent to the House of Representatives for approval. If it is passed there, and secures the President’s signature, it will become law.
This new Nigerian legislation is titled: Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2011. The full text can be read here.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/74807203
Section 5 of the Bill states:
1. Persons who entered into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union commit an offence and are each liable on conviction to a term of 14 years in prison.
2. Any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison.
3. Any person or group of persons that witness, abet and aids the solemnization of a same-sex marriage or civil union, or supports the registration, operation or sustenance of gay clubs, societies, organisations, processions or meetings in Nigeria commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment.”
Here’s Lifesite news ‘reporting’ (I’d say cheerleading) the Nigerian Catholic Bishops endorseing the bill. It seems obvious that the “Orthodox” Catholics over at Lifesite believe that the Archbishop of Ibadan is supporting the entirety of the legislation.
http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/nigerias-bishops-praise-ban-on-public-expression-of-homosexuality/
I won’t attempt to state the obvious anymore. I’m sure I’ve made my case that the Nigerian Bishops have endorsed the bill, and that the ramifications of the bill are obvious. If we don’t see in the Nigerian mass media (we have monitors in Jos, Kaduna, and Lagos) a full throated retraction, we will assume that the position of the Roman Catholic Church is in favor of this bill in its’ entirety and will bring up that support whenever the Roman Catholic Church whines about supposed ‘persecution’ while it advocates jailing peaceful non-Catholics or when they claim not to hate Gay people. “Orthodox” Catholics will own this bill until they disavow it in front of the people of Nigeria (the print edition of the Vanguard would be a good venue, btw). Condemning the bill after it is enacted will not absolve the church from anything. If the Bishop in Minnesota can order priests to not defy him on his political endorsement of an anti-Gay bill there, then why can the Archbishop of Ibadan have freedom of action to support all of this bill. Yes, I’m aware that many Catholics, perhaps even a majority, rightly find the gay-bashing and advocacy of shameful human rights abuses by the church to be repulsive.
Barbara C.
With regards to Uganda, the Ugandan plan was called ABC. Yes abstinance was first, be faithful was second, and use a condom was third. Condoms have always been part of the plan. It is completely ridiculous to ignore the validity of condoms for Gay men. Actually the “Orthodox” Catholic church is not only ignoring the validity of same sex condom use, it is directly frustrates and opposes any HIV/AIDS mitigation efforts directed at Gay men who are not lifelong celibates (99.999999% of men, regardless of sexual orientation are not lifelong celebates). The official position of the Roman Catholic Church appears to be…‘we will oppose same sex HIV education that reaches anyone at risk for the disease’. Facilitating the spread of deadly diseases through the promotion of ignorance is not pro-life. The Roman Catholic Church has chosen, for whatever reason, to be a political entity and force. They cannot hide behind their gilded cathedrals when the public policies they sustain as a matter of public policy for non-Catholics create suffering and loss.
What keeps a committed gay couple from being monogamous?
One does not need marriage to be exclusive.
Does the Church have control over non-Catholics using condoms? Do non-Catholics care that the Church does not condone contraceptives?
As for the “hate” filled remarks, not so much hate as facts.
One Holy Catholic and Apostolic is not a country club. It is the ship that gives us refuge in the chaos of sinful waters. Catholics are either on board or they have jumped ship.
Now that the NCR is no longer owned by Marcial is it still under his influence, and is everyone who works for EWTN a registered Republican? And if they are does that mean they have no rights and are not entitled to their own opinions? Does this mean they are always wrong?
I just want to say this article is superb. Nothing a child can do to make me want to kill them. Nope. Nothing.
Wow, Tom and Harold are CLUELESS, like most of our society I’m afraid. No wonder Africa is seeing an upsurge in Christianity. They are enlightened, and most of our society is lost in the dark of evil and sin. Dear Lord, help us!
About “gay genes”, a quick perusal of many congenital and genetic conditions out there can dissuade anyone from making categorical statements about no genetic basis. There are just so many of them. It might well be that homosexuality has no genetic basis, but it is too soon to dismiss it right at the start.
I mean, have you heard of dyslexia? No one had heard of it fifty years ago, that people could see letter backwards or transpose numbers, but it does exist. Now, for the sske of argument, could there be a dyslexia relating to the sexual recognition of possible partners? That if our sense of smell were more developed we night have less of a problem because we would not rely on secondary sexual characteristics?.. Of course some animans have touble on the sexual recongnition department…
But with so many imperfections shown among humans, why should one more surprise us?
Dear Tom, allow me to quote directly from the Catechism for you.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
-
So the Church operates 117,000 care centers for AIDS patients—27& of institutions doing so worldwide—and we’re the villain, yet the WHO discovers that Depo Provera injections definitely increase a woman’s susceptibility to the disease and they sit around arguing (essentially) about whether it’s better for them to die horribly than to have any more kids. Nothing about that?
-
Marriage and monogamy are not the same thing, they can have one without the other, if they want. As others have pointed out, statistically it doesn’t seem to be a high priority among the men.
-
I can concede that a prison sentence of 10 years for any PDA seems excessive, to my Western mind anyway…but the other things you mention are not for simply ‘being gay’ but for attempting an illegal marriage. It’s not splitting hairs.
I’m impressed that Santorum didn’t even bother with this question.
Considering the hateful and bigoted treatment Sen. Santorum has received from the radical homosexual mafia, it is a testament to his (Christian) charity, that he is still able to speak with the love we have for all who struggle with same sex attractions.
The irony with that protesters comment was if it was found some pre-natal test that proved there was some factors) or influence which would mean someone would definitely have a same sex attraction, faithful Catholics who understand and follow the teachings of the Church would be the only ones not aborting those children.
What an absolutely ignorant question to ask. Has anyone ever made a clear distinction between respect and agreement?
I respect friends and co-workers however I don’t necessarily agree with them when it comes to some issues.
When respect is thought to be agreement, then I know immediately that the person is coming from a place of being a victim. When you are stuck in this mind set your thinking is like this “if you agree with me, good, if not, you are victimizing me.” This is often a stage of healing from being abused however if a person gets stuck in this then it is then a lifelong case of them or me!
So here’s why the question isn’t all that shocking or surprising, and here’s why I’ve been waiting for someone to ask that exact question, and why I was like, “oh, finally!” when I saw this video:
Republicans are HELLBENT on protecting the life of the unborn child, but the moment it falls out of the womb into the arms of some teenage mom in poverty who doesn’t want it, suddenly it’s this thing of welfare that doesn’t deserve any help from the state at all. So basically, Republicans support the dignity and respect of the unborn, but not the dignity and the respect of the living.
Along similar lines, there’s a statement that’s gone around for a while that says, “If my unborn fetus was gay, would you still support its rights?” Which I think is a very clever, very witty question.
And I think this “would you abort a gay baby?” is simply an offshoot of this idea, even if it’s worded rather poorly. But I sure lol’ed when I heard the question!
I could never vote for a catholic president. He is a Catholic first, an american second. I need our president to be an American first. If your alegiance is primarily to a Foreign leader, you can’t be americas.
Santorum has been verbally abusive to Gays for decades. That is why he googles what he does. Is it mean, YES. Is it fair, well, it kind of is with his treatment of gays.
Tom, keep up the good fight! Well played sir, well played.
eness, its a 10 year sentence for attending a private relgious same sex marriage. Just being in the audience. 14 years for even holiding a sign saying. I support Gay rights. And its’ all endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church in full view of the World’s press. The Catholic Church Catechism number 2358 is nothing more than a PR statement never to be publicized in Africa. Its a sham.
Just to be clear, the bill removes all freedom of speech, petition, protest, assembly, expression, association, RELIGION, and due process for Gay Nigerians and their supporters. And its supported by Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to gay babies, there are (many more) bisexual babies. In an ideal world (that is, one in which you stop being hysterical and malicious about different sexual orientations, which you will, eventually), at any one time, about a third of the population will be in homosexual relationships. You will get used to it when you grow up. Part of that growing up means resigning as General Manager of the Universe and judging people, and their relationships, on their indivudal merits, rather than on the basis of ridiculous fabrications.
“Someone asked Santorum: “Would you abort a gay baby?””
## Sounds like a fair question - what’s wrong with asking him ? Santorum is not a private person, but a prominent politician whoaspires to be President. If he wants to be spared hard questions, he should either not seek to be President, or not make an issue of being pro-life. There are plenty of people in the US who are hostile to gay people: it is perfectly fair to test where he stands on what is a prominent issue. Gay voters are entitled to know where an aspirant to the Presidency stands on this matter - especially as Santorum would, if elected, be Commander-in-Chief of a fair number of gay service personnel. Why should he be spared such questions ? How can they *not* be asked ? I hope he will be asked plenty of such questions, instead of being let off having to face up to issues which do not lend themselves to easy solutions.

“I could never vote for a catholic president. He is a Catholic first, an american second. I need our president to be an American first. If your alegiance is primarily to a Foreign leader, you can’t be americas.”
The allegiance of Catholics is NOT to a foreign leader; it is to God. The Pope is merely an instrument of God, as all Catholics are called to be. The Pope is the head of the Church, but only in his religious capacity. It would be closer to the truth to say this about Islam; they have their own set of laws. Even the Church of England is closer to what you accuse the Catholic Church of being, since their religious head is (technically) the Queen.
If you are demanding that people must forsake their most important beliefs in order to become president, then how can you trust them? What stops them from being just as unfaithful to the country, when they were unfaithful to God?
manticore :
“Sounds like a fair question - what’s wrong with asking him ?”
It’s a stupid question. Why? Because abortion itself is wrong, there would be no point in aborting a homosexual baby even if it were possible to determine this, and because the question is basically “would you (personally) kill homosexuals?” I think perhaps the person was trying to ask a question with no right answer (and failing). The best way to deal with questions like this is to ignore them; don’t give the heckler a public forum; “don’t feed the trolls.”
I cannot put this any other way. Asking if Rick would abort a Gay Baby
is so stupid it does not deserve an answer.
One is not born gay so that question is twice as stupid.
Abortion itself is wrong. Life begins at conception.
As any non politically correct Dr. or Scientist.
I’d like to know first of all, how you would even know the child you were carrying were gay? Is that simple enough to understand? We believe all abortion is wrong as it is killing an unborn child.
Also I’d like to know why some are posting hateful anti-Catholic rhetoric against gays when they are not even aware of what the Church teaches.
Gays are welcome in our Church as long as they’re not indulging in sexual behavior. And by the way, heterosexuals living together but not married are also not encouraged to live in this manner.
No matter how angry you are about this, the Church itself will never change it’s views, no matter how the culture changes. So, like it or not, we will be praying for you, as every individual has his or her own weaknesses to overcome.
Tarcisian: God is not an American and has no alegiance to the Constitution. Our constitution has several direct conflicts with God. God requires being the only deity, the constution has a non establishment clause of religion. So, A Catholic that is Catholic first, American second is serving 2 masters. I can never vote for a Catholic. If a “good” Christian upheld the 10 commandments and could pass legislation, I would be killed for working on Sundays. A theocracy is not a good thing unless it is YOUR theocracy I guess. Santorum also wants Birth Control to be a “states rights” issue. No vote for you Rick.
Santorum must have thought (like I do) that it was a very stupid question—For you can’t tell if a baby is going to participate in the gay lifestyle or not. That’s like asking if you would abort a baby that is a cigarette smoker. I wouldn’t bother giving any time to such an idiotic question if I was there—For he was there to answer legitimate questions.
They really need to start screening these poeple that go to these meetings/

@rover
I have a feeling you wouldn’t vote for a republican, let alone a Catholic. You’ve been around here awhile and you like to stir up the pot. But it is a free country, by all means, don’t vote for Rick Santorum.
@Tom
I have followed internet stories that talk about marriage and family for some time now. One thing is universally true: if there is even a HINT of reference to same sex relationships, the LGBT squad comments in full force. I have started to wonder if they are paid to sit at the computer searching for com-boxes to fill.
To rover:
It’s not the man thats going to save the USA. It is GOD. You need to turn back to him and the bible as I do need to do the same thing, as all of us. If the USA turns back to God, he will save us. We all know the things that are happening here are not right!
Tom, To begin to understand why the Church teaches the harm of homosexual relations or any sin we all need to pray and connect to God. That has to come first. When we pray we have to be open to the Word God has spoken and the truth. That assures we are really willing and trying to speak to HIM, not ourselves. The Catholic Church teaches the greatest prayer is the Mass where we are present as Jesus offered Himself once for all for our sins to reestablish our relationship to God’s grace, and the second greatest prayer is the rosary where we meditate on Christ’s life. The stations of the cross are a great prayer for appreciating what God calls love and self sacrifice. If we are open and pray, then the stance of the Nigerian government being endorsed by the Bishops of the country makes more sense. Because sin has consequences and if what we are witnessing in the United States is any indication, those consequences have serious spiritual and physical consequences for society. They include demonizing the teaching of Jesus Christ, promoting anti-religious bias and bigotry, indoctrinating children into the homosexual life-style or acceptance of sins of the flesh and turning them off to any and all religions, undermining marriage as the union of a man and a woman established by God to bring life into the world, lying to people who have same sex attraction about the seriousness to their health and soul of their actions and denying the power of God’s grace to overcome temptation and sin, undermining our core values as a nation, etc. Such serious consequences need a serious response. Friendship is the natural instrument of two people of the same sex. It can be deep and lasting. When a line is crossed, all friendships are tainted. The natural affinity of men to women and women to men is also harmed. That’s not ok for anyone. The laissez-faire attitude also promotes other vices such as divorce, polygamy, gambling, human traffiking etc. I am grateful that someone is standing up to say “No!”. With this law hopefully there will be or already are sources of help for people who are struggling against this. And our Church should lead the way in that since we know the power of God’s grace.
I think it is a valid question that one should ask the GOP. Look at McCain! He spent the last 3 years denying gays their rights. Sorry but republicans have no respect for gays rights. Somewhere they think that their religious beliefs should have a say in how one is treated in life. there is a reason why we have separation of church and state. Its to get the general public to agree with one system instead of multiple systems. Lets face it, the bible is full of extreme contradictions that could never hold up as law right now. As time passes and we grow as a society I hope we separate the church from or government more. The only being that I will trust to know what gods word will be is god. Don’t get caught up in mans erroneous and manipulative interpretations of gods word. Think for yourself and try to live an ethical life, and I’m sure you will go up instead of down when you die.
How are people saying that there is no right answer to the question?? The answer is “NO.” It’s not some trick question, you just say ‘No, I wouldn’t participate in a mass genocide of gay babies.’ and move on. I’m not surprised Santorum wouldn’t though…Speaks to his character.
After talking to the several gay guys that I know well and friends with, they all lived normal lives and none of the hypothesized “causes” of homosexuality they never experienced. I realize thought that everyone’s different and it may very well be onset of experiences in early life that some people are the way they are, but I’ve come to learn that some people honestly just always felt the way they always have and there is no cause. I feel like one of the stupidest discriminating policies that was created was the DADT. How does serving our country have anything whatsoever to do with who someone has an attraction for. I realize this has little to do with this article, but it was just a form of discrimination that I was happy to hear they repealed.
