Did the Catholic Church "Change the Sabbath"?

Did the Catholic Church "Change the Sabbath"?

You sometimes encounter the charge that the Catholic Church wrongly "changed the sabbath" from Saturday to Sunday. This claim is often made by Seventh-Day Adventists, for example. But even if one isn't accusing the Church of wrongdoing, the question can still arise: Why do Catholics worship on Sunday rather than Saturday? Here's the story . . .

What Day the Sabbath Is

First, let's clear away a potential source of confusion. While it's true that people sometimes speak of Sunday as "the Christian sabbath," this is a loose way of speaking. Strictly speaking, the sabbath is the day it always was--Saturday--though it should be noted that traditionally Jewish people have celebrated the sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Sunday is a distinct day, which follows the sabbath. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains:

2175 Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ.

Why We Celebrate Sunday

That same paragraph explains why we celebrate on Sunday. For Christians the ceremonial observance of Sunday replaces that of the sabbath. Properly speaking, we're not celebrating the sabbath on Sunday. We're celebrating something else, but it's something that the sabbath points toward. As the Catechism says, the Jewish sabbath announces man's eternal rest in God and prefigures some aspects of Christ. Sunday thus fulfills what the sabbath pointed toward.

The Lord's Day

What we are celebrating instead of the sabbath is "the Lord's day." That's something Christians have celebrated since the first century. In fact, in the very first chapter of Revelation, we read that John experienced the inaugural vision of the book on "the Lord's day." He writes:

I John, your brother, who share with you in Jesus the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet [Revelation 1:9-10].

And he goes on to describe the vision of Jesus Christ he received. For our purposes, the important thing to note is that he speaks of the Lord's day as an already-established thing. He expects his readers to know what it is. So, when is it?

It is an assumption to say that the Lords day refers to Sunday, based on a name given to it by the roman church centuries later. In fact the only reference to a day that Jesus tells us he is Lord of I’d found here;
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. (Matthew 12:8 KJV)

God taught the Jewish people to celebrate the sabbath.  The old testment teaches that, Jesus practiced that and that is what I do.  It has not been an issue with me I just try and what god taught and Jesus and his decilples practiced.

Acts 20:6-7 But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days joined them at Troas, where we stayed seven days. Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

107AD IGNATIUS: let every friend of Christ keep the Lord’s Day as a festival, the resurrection-day, the queen and chief of all the days of the week. (Ignatius, Epistle to the Magnesians, chp 9. Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, pg. 62-63.)

Thank you Jimmy! My husband and I grew up in the Seventh-day Adventist church and their official teaching is that in the last days the Catholics will spearhead a worldwide movement to hunt down, persecute and even kill Seventh-day Adventists for keeping the “right” Sabbath (Saturday) as opposed the Sunday “Sabbath.” Their prophetess Ellen G. White had a vision about this and it is accepted by the church as authoritative. Adventists also interpret Revelation’s “mark of the beast” to be worshipping on Sunday.

We might just all smile and think this is just some fringe group, but the SDA church is one of the top two fastest growing Protestant churches in the world and one of their main target groups for conversion are Catholics—especially those in third world countries.

My husband and I wrote a book about the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and what it teaches—available at Amazon.com entitled, “It’s Okay NOT to be a Seventh-day Adventist.” Many of your readers may be interested in it for it explains not only what they believe but how to witness to Adventists.

Your video is very helpful in explaining why Sunday isn’t the Sabbath! And this is how so many Adventists can cause confusion on this topic. God bless you in your work. And in 2008 my husband and I entered the BEAUTIFUL, wonderful, excellent Catholic Church. Your writings have been a great educational tool in better understanding our faith.

FWIW, when an SDA becomes Orthodox, he must be received by baptism.

The Saturday Sabbath is NOT the reason. That’s the LEAST of their problems.

The real issue is their faulty Christology which says that Jesus is the Archangel Michael made flesh and that Satan will be the one who takes away the sins of the world at the last judgement.

AWESOME job of explaining the Sabbath and the Lord’s Day.  Thank you so much for your research and hard work.  VERY INFORMATIVE!

The 7th day Sabbath was given to the nation of Israel as a memorial. Jesus, being a Jew, kept the Sabbath. No where in Scripture are Gentiles commanded to keep the Sabbath. The 7th day Sabbath was given to the nation of Israel exclusively.

The Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Churches sing this on Holy Saturday:

Great Moses mystically prefigured this present day when he said, ‘And God blessed the seventh day’. For this is the blessed Sabbath; this is the day of rest on which the only-begotten Son of God rested from all his works, through the dispensation in accordance with death, he kept the Sabbath in the flesh; and returning once again to what he was through the Resurrection he has granted us eternal life, for he alone is good and loves mankind.

Any questions?

Exo 31:16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the sabbath, observing the sabbath throughout their generations, as a perpetual covenant.
Exo 31:17 *It is a sign for ever between me and the people of Israel* that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.’” The Sabbath was given to the nation of Israel.

@ Derek H.
Cutting and pasting is not very effective. Besides, Christ observed the sabbath, so did Paul.

LarryB, what exactly does “observe the Sabbath” mean?

It cannot possibly refer to worship for two reasons:

1. The commandment, as listed in the Decalogue, enjoins rest from labor, not worship. This was a rest from labor that extended even to one’s slaves and farm animals.

2. There were TWICE daily services in the Temple, and from the time of the Exile to this day, in Synagogues, especially traditional ones.

So, can you clarify?

Another question: Since Christ has come, what day do we get to keep in an UNholy and PROFANE manner, that we may live according to the desires of our own hearts, and not after God’s wishes for us?

@dixibehr——If you want to know what the sabbath means I would suggest you visit a Jewish website, maybe “Aish” dot com.  there are many others.
I would rather they clarify for you. I do not understand what your asking about when you say “what day do we get to keep in an UNholy and PROFANE manner” I am totally confused.

Of course Christ and Paul observed the Sabbath. They were Jews. Where is the command for Gentiles to keep the Sabbath?

If the Sabbath was given to all men, why were Gentiles called “strangers”. Why were Gentiles outside the gates not required to keep the Sabbath? Ex 20:10.

there is no commandment for the gentiles nor any commandments denying them the same.

God blessed the Sabbath day in Eden - before the Fall, before the nation of Israel.
And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: -Mark 2:27
Who was the Sabbath made for?

If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15 KJV)
Jesus words. Where is the command by Jesus to stop keeping His commandments?
I love the Sabbath, it’s a pleasure and a joy, who made it such a burden?

How could Adam, Noah and Abraham keep the Sabbath, when Deuteronomy 5:2-4 says that the 10 commandment covenant (see was “not made with any of the fathers of Israel who lived before Moses.”
If the Sabbath was for Gentiles and Adam, Noah and Abraham, then why is the Sabbath a sign to remind their exodus from Egypt? Exodus 16:23,29; 31:13-18. Were either Abraham or Adam, or Noah ever slaves in Egypt?

We need to remember that God did all his creating long before the weeks and the names of days were invented. The fact that we make Sunday the first day of the week is purely arbitrary - any day could have been chosen as the first day of the week. The issue is to keep one day holy to celebrate God’s creation.

I have experienced an exodus from Egypt also. Haven’t you as a Christian been loosed from your bonds? If we start to deny that Sabbath was given in Eden as so clearly shown in Genesis -
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Genesis 2:2, 3 KJV) next we can go along and say that God didn’t create the Earth in 6 days, in fact we may as well throw out Genesis altogether. If we get rid of Genesis, what good is Exodus? Hey let’s just rewrite the entire Bible according to our convenience? See where this is going? I call the Sabbath a delight, I call Jesus the Son of the living God. Who do you say He is? Oh by the way, Happy Sabbath from Australia! God Bless

The Sabbath is a sign, not of Exodus but of Faith-that I know that God sanctifies me! So I call it a delight.
And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God. (Ezekiel 20:20 KJV)
I find it hard to believe that God would make a day Holy and not share it with Adam and Eve. (Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. -Amos 3:7 KJV)

How could the Sabbath be a sign between God and Israel, if all nations were expected to keep it? Ex 31:17
Why did God send the Jews into Babylonian Captivity for breaking the Sabbath, but never ever criticized any Gentiles for never keeping the Sabbath?
If every man from Adam to Moses kept the Sabbath, why is the Hebrew word for the weekly Sabbath found in the ten commandments, never found in the book of Genesis? Why is no one before Moses ever being told to keep the Sabbath. Why are there no examples of anyone keeping the Sabbath?

Deu 5:3 Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive this day.
The Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel that He didn’t make with their fathers. Including the Sabbath.
Exo 31:17 *It is a sign for ever between me and the people of Israel* that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.’”
The Sabbath was a sign between God and the nation of Israel. No such commandment was given to the Gentiles and therefore no obligation to keep it.

Friend, you can respect Gods Sabbaths as an heir of the promise to Abraham, a Spiritual Jew, and keep this sign or you can disregard it. The word in Genesis for rested is “shabath” it is intrinsically linked to the word used in the Ten Commandments for Sabbath (obviously) being “shabbath” an intensive form of the same word. The first (used in genesis) used on relation to Sabbath observance, prior and after the Decalogue was given.

And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now [are] many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. Exodus 5:5
Moses reminded the children of Israel of their Sabath rest.
And in collecting double mana before the Sabbath, prior to the Decalogue. I don’t know how this isn’t clear. If God blessed the seventh day in Eden, you believe He didn’t share it with Adam and Eve? What you do with this blessing is your choice.

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:18-19.

So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. -James 2:12
God Bless

The future of the Sabbath-
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord. -Isaiah 66:22, 23

Jesus looking towards the future when the temple would be destroyed In 70Ad;
But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: -Matthew 24:20 - apparently he didn’t see the Sabbath as being obsolete- and the Christians that heard these words were saved when they left Jerusalem - Gentiles and Jews- Spiritual Israel.
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Genesis 12:3

To John the revelator seeing towards the end of Time he saw Christians being persecuted (as Jesus also spoke of)
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Revelation 14:12

The commandments were the only thing on the entire bible we have that we’re written by Gods own hand! He wrote - remember (the sabbath day) knowing perhaps how quickly we would forget?
Blessings

If every man from Adam to Moses kept the Sabbath, why is the Hebrew word for the weekly Sabbath found in the ten commandments, never found in the book of Genesis? Why is no one before Moses ever being told to keep the Sabbath. Why are there no examples of anyone keeping the Sabbath?
Why were the Patriarchs never instructed about he Sabbath, but were instructed regarding: offerings: Gen 4:3-4, Altars Gen 8:20, Priests: Gen 14:18, Tithes: Gen 14:20, Circumcision: Gen 17:10, Marriage: Gen 2:24 & Gen 34:9. Why would God leave out the “all important” Sabbath command?
If the Gentiles were supposed to keep the Sabbath, why are they called “strangers of the Covenant” in Eph 2:12?
God revealed “made known” the Sabbath law at Sinai, He did not remind them. Nehemiah 9:13-14 “You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them just ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments. You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, and commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, by the hand of Moses Your servant.”
No one prior to the Exodus from Egypt (Ex 16) even knew about the Sabbath law: Ezek 20:10-12 “So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. 11 “And I gave them My statutes and informed them of My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live. 12 “And also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 “But the house of Israel rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes, and they rejected My ordinances, by which, if a man observes them, he will live; and My Sabbaths they greatly profaned.”

I gave you am example in Exodus 5:5 and in gathering man before the commandments were given. I am sorry that you are so zealous to ;
... break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so,.... (Matthew 5:19 KJV)
I can see that you have made up your mind. I praise God that he has fulfilled the new covenant - by putting His Laws in my heart, through His amazing Love. I will respond to His love by keeping His commandments, it is my living sacrifice and His blessing. God bless

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: (Exodus 20:10 KJV)
-nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. Gentiles? Rahab was adopted as part of the heritage of Israel, she too would have kept the Sabbath. All through the Old Testament, people were adopted into the heritage of Jacob. Circumcision was part of that process, we are distinctly told that that particular rite is no longer necessary by Paul’s letters. Yet Paul kept and taught on the Sabbath. And yes he are bread on Sunday. And Monday and Tuesday - everyday! But he Kept sabbath and his mission was to the Gentiles.
And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. Acts 18:4
The Greeks were Gentiles. Friend, I think I will playboy safe and take my Lord and Saviours advice- If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15
Blessings

First Occurrence of the word “Sabbath” - Exodus 16:22-23 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. Then he said to them, ‘This is what the Lord has said: ‘Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake today, and boil what you will boil; and lay up for yourselves all that remains, to be kept until morning. The text in verse 23-30 indicates that this was a new experience for Israel. They were not used to keeping the Sabbath before this time.
If they had the Sabbath before Ex 16, then they just as likely had the manna before as well. Yet Sabbatarians freely admit that the manna was something new for them. Yet when we look at the text, the Jews were equally unfamiliar with both manna and the Sabbath.

First God rested, then after he rested then He sanctified it. This proves that the Sabbath was not part of God’s eternal law in heaven prior to creation!
The Bible no where says when he sanctified it, just that it was after God rested.
Even if God did sanctify the Sabbath day in Eden, God still did not revealed the Sabbath in Eden because there is absolutely no evidence that anyone kept the Sabbath prior to Ex 16.
Gen 2:2 tells us the reason, not the time that God sanctified the Sabbath.
Genesis was written during the time of Moses, not before. Neither Adam or Abraham had the book of Genesis! For the first time God told the Jews in the wilderness about the Sabbath.
Christ was chosen as the sacrificial lamb from before the foundation of the world, ( 1 Pe 1:20; 2 Tim 1:9) but did not revealed to man some time later, (at least 6 days) and then only after man ate the tree of life. Specific details were not revealed for some 4000 years until Christ walked the earth. In fact God set Jesus apart as the sacrifice for man long before God actually gave His son.

How do we know the Sabbath is truly our Saturday? How do we know Sunday is not really the ancient equivalent of Wednesday? Didn’t the Roman change the calendar with Julius? And now we have the Gregorian calendar. It is a semantics, I think God and Jesus is asking we keep at least one day set aside for worship, besides if we are children of God are we not to be perfect like our Father everyday? I do not remember Christ putting any disclaimers on the day of the week. Good Grief

\\@dixibehr——If you want to know what the sabbath means I would suggest you
visit a Jewish website, maybe “Aish” dot com. there are many others.
I would rather they clarify for you.\\

I’m not really interested in what “sabbath” (the word itself actually means cessation or vacation) signifies to Jews or judaizers. I’m explaining another matter entirely: the prophetic significance to Christians—that is, as a foretelling of Christ’s rest in the tomb. Since the Sabbath commandment has been fulfilled, it has passed away.

\\ I do not understand what your asking
about when you say “what day do we get to keep in an UNholy and PROFANE
manner” I am totally confused.\\

And I do not understand what you don’t understand about this perfectly simple English prose question. But allow me to rephrase it. If the Sabbath is to be kept holy (and as I previously pointed out, there is NO obligation to worship on that day as it is given in the Decalogue), obviously, there is at least ONE day when we are allowed to be unholy and sinful and keep it in a wicked manner. Can you tell me which day that is?

As a Christian, my understanding is that ALL our lives, every moment of every day, is to be kept holy to the Lord.

@dihibehr—The Sabbath is the sign that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 20:8-11, 31:12-17).  This is what I believe the sabbath is.  I keep it because we are told to, just as we are to told not to murder, steal etc.  I am still confused by your question, as to which day we can be unholy, sinful and keep in a wicked manner.  Since you do not understand why I cannot understand your simple question, I suppose you cannot teach what you want to make understood?

If Sabbath was made for man, then Why would God bless the Seventh day of the week, and keep it to himself? Again you keep skimming over the rest that Moses reminded the Children of Israel of while they were still in Egypt. (Exodus 5:5) I’m am really surprised that this is such sn issue…for anyone professing to serve and live God. He gives us rest! Before the Fall He gave Adsm and Eve Rest! Not to prefigure Rest in Christ, not of Works - Rest typifies not working - ceasing. Isaiah foresaw it would be kept in Heaven (Isaiah 66) Jesus kept it and declared that no part of the Law would be done away with as long as heaven and earth stood. It’s a blessing, enjoy it!

It seems the point is that yes, the sabbath is good, but the “first day of the week” is now made more important. So if you want to be a Christian and celebrate the sabbath, go right ahead, no one will stop you. But you should reflect on the early Christian witness to liturgical worship on the day following, and the importance thereof. Sts. Paul and Ignatius make that pretty clear.

And what’s really important to note is that nowhere in Scripture are Gentile Christians ever expected to celebrate the sabbath - by which I mean place it above the first day of the week in terms of liturgical celebration and observance. All of us as Christians see that the Day of the Lord’s Resurrection is now the day on which we are called to celebrate.

PS That this is even a debate is beyond me. I suppose that all Christians had to be circumcized and observe kosher law before the Council of Jerusalem too, eh?

Exo 5:5 And Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many and you make them rest from their burdens!”
Where in the above verse does it say anything about a Sabbath day?
The Israelites knew nothing of it until Sinai.

Daniel 7:25 he shall speak pompous words against the Most High, shall persecute the siants of the Most High, and shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and times and a half time. NKJV. History told us that roman catholic did it… Gbu

The word rest used here is the same word used in Genesis 2:2- Shabat. It is interesting that you are comfortable to point out that a specific intensive of the same word isn’t used until Sinai, but then ignore what Christ says about Sabvath in Matthew 24- seeing it still part of the church even up until 70ad (as I mentioned above) and that he says clearly- if you love me keep my commandments, that the latter day church will still be keeping the commandments of God and even identified by such in Revelation 14, that the apostle Paul was teaching the Gentiles and the Jews (although he was specially focused upon the Gentiles) on the Sabbath which it is clearly written that he kept.
God blessed the sabbath in Heaven as the crowing work of creation, He rested in the grave after finishing His work of Redemption, and we will keep Sabbath in heaven as a memorial of His restoration of all things. It is a huge blessing and no work (ceasing) = no burden in my book. Here’s what I take from the Scriptures and praise God for the Rest that remains (Hebrews 4). What you decide to do with that is up to you, but remember - But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it,  and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. (James 1:25 NKJV) - So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. (James 2:12 NKJV)
And again in John;
Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 John 2:3, 4 NKJV)
I believe that the Law was restored to Israel, the Sabbath was given on Eden and the covenant was made at Sinai, after 430 years of Egyptian slavery, they had lost truth, just as we have in our current symbolic Babylonian captivity. Slaves to error until- the time of restoration of all things
whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. (Acts 3:21 NKJV). God bless

Daniel 7:25 he shall speak pompous words against the Most High. Shall persecute the saints of the Most High. And shall intend to change times and law. Then the saints shall be given into his hand. For a time and times and a half time. NKJV. History told us that roman catholic church did it

I assume you’re referring to Matt. 24:20:
Mat 24:20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath.
This is a reference to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The reason Christ made this statement is because the gates of the city would be closed by the Law keeping Jews and escape from the city would be nearly impossible.
Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.
After God created the world he rested on the 7th day. Not from weariness, but from creating. God did not sanctify the 7th day until 2500 years later when he instructed the Israelites to observe it as a day of worship. It was to celebrate their deliverance from Egypt. However, it was never celebrated until that time. Then it was sanctified as a day of worship but not until that time.
Exo 31:13 “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You shall keep my sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you.
The Sabbath was a sign between God and Israel. If all nations are to observe it, how could it be a sign between God and one nation?

The Catholic church admitted they changed the Sabbath. They also admit there’s not a single Bible verse to back it up. Google “Rome’s Challenge to Protestants” first printed in the Catholic Mirror of Sept. 2, 1893.

In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:18 NKJV)

The Gentiles shall come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising. (Isaiah 60:3 NKJV)

I am sorry that you can’t see this blessing. You seem to look for answers in what the bible ISN’T saying. This is your view, I have presented the one that I believe is justified in the works of God. I hope you come to the heritage of Jacob and that we both find the promises of Abraham and become spiritually Israel. I hope, friend that we find Rest. God bless.

90AD DIDACHE: “Christian Assembly on the Lord’s Day: 1. But every Lord’s day do ye gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. 2. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. 3. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, saith the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations.” (Didache: The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, Chapter XIV)
150AD JUSTIN: Moreover, all those righteous men already mentioned [after mentioning Adam. Abel, Enoch, Lot, Noah, Melchizedek, and Abraham], though they kept no Sabbaths, were pleasing to God; and after them Abraham with all his descendants until Moses… And you [fleshly Jews] were commanded to keep Sabbaths, that you might retain the memorial of God. For His word makes this announcement, saying, “That you may know that I am God who redeemed you.” (Dialogue With Trypho the Jew, 150-165 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, page 204)
200AD TERTULLIAN: Let him who contends that the Sabbath is still to be observed a balm of salvation, and circumcision on the eighth day because of threat of death, teach us that in earliest times righteous men kept Sabbath or practiced circumcision, and so were made friends of God. .. ...Therefore, since God originated Adam uncircumcised, and inobservant of the Sabbath, consequently his offspring also, Abel, offering Him sacrifices, uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, was by Him commended… Noah also, uncircumcised - yes, and inobservant of the Sabbath - God freed from the deluge. For Enoch, too, most righteous man, uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, He translated from this world… Melchizedek also, “the priest of most high God,” uncircumcised and inobservant of the Sabbath, was chosen to the priesthood of God. (An Answer to the Jews 2:10; 4:1, Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol. 3, page 153)
100 AD BARNABAS “We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead” (The Epistle of Barnabas, 100 AD 15:6-8).
100 AD BARNABAS: Moreover God says to the Jews, ‘Your new moons and Sabbaths 1 cannot endure.’ You see how he says, ‘The present Sabbaths are not acceptable to me, but the Sabbath which I have made in which, when I have rested [heaven: Heb 4] from all things, I will make the beginning of the eighth day which is the beginning of another world.’ Wherefore we Christians keep the eighth day for joy, on which also Jesus arose from the dead and when he appeared ascended into heaven. (15:8f, The Epistle of Barnabas, 100 AD, Ante-Nicene Fathers , vol. 1, pg. 147)

The Catholic Church did not change the Sabbath.

Mate, I’ll stick with the bible. Where warnings were given about infiltrators in the church teaching another Gospel. That last quote from Barnabas - is another Gospel. I can see where your confusion stems from. I will stay with what we were taught bin the beginning. This tide of false doctrines were already full by 100ad and you have proved this perfectly.

“Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also. Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life. These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. (1 John 2:18-27 NKJV)

“This tide of false
doctrines were already full by 100ad and you have proved this perfectly. “

In other words, the gates of hell prevailed against the Church after all, and Christ’s promise to the contrary proved to be a lie.

BTW—I have asked this question, and nobody has answered it.

What exactly does “keep the Sabbath holy” mean in the context of the Decalogue, since all that is actually commanded is rest from labor, rather than worship?

@dixibehr—I have been studying Judaism only for about a year.  I have there is no shortage of opinions to your question.  I like this one. ——-“So keeping the Sabbath day holy not only means that we aren’t to buy or sell, but also means that we are to refrain from our own pleasures such as sporting events, television, movies, etc. Also we are not even to speak our own words! Even our speech should be about Yahweh and His word. I assure you, if we keep the Sabbath day in this manner it will be much easier keeping Yahweh’s commandments because we have one day each week to refresh ourselves spiritually. It is a day that we can look forward to during the week that we can fully refresh ourselves both physically and spiritually. Yahweh never made our bodies to withstand constant labor day after day. It is no wonder that so many people we meet are so tired all of the time. And it is no wonder that people often fall away.”

Questions for Sabbatarians:

If the first/old covenant was abolished according to Heb 8:13 and the Ten commandment law was that first covenant (Ex 34:27-28; 1 Kings 8:9,21; Heb 9:1-4), then why do Sabbatarians want to keep the first/old covenant?
If the Sabbath is not a ceremonial law, then why is it lumped into the same identical class of “holy convocations” as the rest of the Jewish feast days? Lev 23:2; Ex 20:9; 31:17
If the 10 commandments remain but the book of law was abolished, then why did God put two copies of the 10 commandments in the book of the law? Ex 20; Deut 5
How can there possibly be an difference between “the law of God” and the “Law of Moses” when God gave the Law of Moses (Ezra 7:6; Neh 8:1) and Moses gave the Law of God (Neh 10:29; 2 Chron 34:14)?
If there is a distinction between the moral and ceremonial laws, why are the Jewish feast days called part of the Law of the Lord? (2 Chron 331:3)
If there is a distinction between the moral and ceremonial laws, why in a single chapter of Nehemiah 8are the following phrases all used interchangeably: “book of the law of Moses” v1, “the law” v2, “book of the law” v3, “the law of god” v8, “book of the law of god” v18?

It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience— concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. (Hebrews 9:9, 10 NKJV). Ordinances are clearly explained here. I am curious, the Ten Commandments are no longer binding for you? Do you worship idols, murder, steal, take another mans wife, lie, disrespect your parents etc? Or is it just the Sabbath you have a problem with? Why? People ask why do they make such a fuss about the Sabbath? We don’t. We just do it. It’s a delight, it is not a burden!

having abolished in His flesh the enmity,  that is,  the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two,  thus making peace, (Ephesians 2:15 NKJV)

He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? (Matthew 15:3 NKJV)

The example of the apostles;
On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. (Acts 13:44, 45 NKJV)

And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. (Acts 16:13 NKJV)

Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying,  “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. (Acts 17:2-4 NKJV)

A MULTITUDE OF DEVOUT GREEKS- KEEPING SABBATH, A JEWISH INSTITUTION? IT WAS PAUL’S CUSTOM- PAUL WHO TAUGHT THAT OTHER CERTAIN CUSTOMS WERE NO LONGER BINDING, SUCH AS CIRCUMCISION, KEPT SABBATH AND TAUGHT GREEKS (GENTILES) ON SABBATH.
I WILL KEEP THE DAY THAT MY LORD KEPT, IT IS A JOY AND A DELIGHT.

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. -Luke 4:16

Why would Paul write,
Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law. (Romans 3:31 NKJV)
Which Law? What shall we say then?  Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said,  “You shall not covet.” (Romans 7:7 NKJV)
It surprises me that people take the Words of Jesus and claim they were only meaningful while He lived, and some new thing took their place in His death, what do you do with this? (I will put it here a third time)
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19 NKJV)
?

The New Covenant is an old promise-
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,  “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the   Lord : I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds,  “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” (Hebrews 10:14-17 NKJV) (from Jeremiah 31:33)
The Law stands, but now it is in our desire to uphold it, through the selfless act of Gods love, His sacrifice puts the Law not before us to witness against us, but within our hearts and minds.

Jamie, thank you for your comments. You missed one thing. Do not contest against Satan. We are warned against combating against satan. Stop, bow and prayfor Jesus. The holy spirit will convict those that are of the truth. Peace and prayers for you my friend. Praise the Holy name of Jesus.

“having abolished in His flesh the enmity,  that is,  the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two,  thus making peace, (Ephesians 2:15 NKJV)”
Yes, the law of commandments contained in ordinances was abolished. That includes the Sabbath which I proved in my posts and you never addressed.
“He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?” (Matthew 15:3 NKJV)
Christ was speaking to law keeping Jews.
“On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.” (Acts 13:44, 45 NKJV)
Paul was taking advantage of having an audience to preach to.
“And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.” (Acts 16:13 NKJV)
Once again, Paul knew the Sabbath keepers would be assembled and would provide an audience.
“Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying,  “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. (Acts 17:2-4 NKJV)
A MULTITUDE OF DEVOUT GREEKS- KEEPING SABBATH, A JEWISH INSTITUTION? IT WAS PAUL’S CUSTOM- PAUL WHO TAUGHT THAT OTHER CERTAIN CUSTOMS WERE NO LONGER BINDING, SUCH AS CIRCUMCISION, KEPT SABBATH AND TAUGHT GREEKS (GENTILES) ON SABBATH.”
While Paul taught in the synagogues up to 84 times, why does the Bible never say he kept the sabbath?
If Paul’s action of preaching to non-believers 84 times in the book of Acts on the Sabbath make him a Sabbath keeper, is a Seventh-day Adventist pastor a Sunday keeper if we invite him for 84 Sundays in a row to teach us about God’s word?
If the Sabbath law is still in force, then why do they not stone their own members when they break the Sabbath as the law said?
Just because the very first preaching of the Gospel occurred on the day of Pentecost, does not mean Christian must keep Pentecost! Acts 2:1-38
Paul also rushed to get back to Jerusalem on Pentecost: Acts 20:16
Pentecost always fell on a Sunday.
Does this mean he was keeping Pentecost feast?
No! It provided him a great opportunity to teach.
No where after the resurrection do we find “keeping the Sabbath according to the commandment.”

Christ did fulfill the law. He removed the commandments contained in ordinances which included the 7th day Sabbath.
Notice the word “persuade”. Paul’s work here was 100% evangelism. There is no example of Paul ever meeting on the Sabbath day for worship.
Notice also that these were “unbelievers” in Christ before Paul preached to them. Yes they believed in the Jewish system, but the Bible says in Acts 14:1, that they became believers proving Paul’s work there was evangelism not worship.
The Greeks were Jewish converts to Judaism known as proselytes. They were not pagan Greeks but Greeks who practiced the law of Moses and kept the Sabbath. just as if he was a native Hebrew. The only Greeks that were in the synagogue would be these proselytes. These Greeks were certainly were not Christians.
Acts 13:43 “Now when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God.”
Acts 14:1 “In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.”
Acts 17:4 “And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of the God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women.
Acts 18:4 “And he was reasoning in the synagogue every Sabbath and trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.”

Acts 21:20-28 “And when they heard it they began glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the Law; and they have been told about you, that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children nor to walk according to the customs. “What, then, is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. “Therefore do this that we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; take them and purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses in order that they may shave their heads; and all will know that there is nothing to the things which they have been told about you, but that you yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Law.
Acts 21:20-28: forsake Moses & circumcise = keeping the Law
If Sabbatarians are right, then they better start also practicing circumcision.
What proves too much proves nothing at all!

Acts 3:22 “Moses said, ‘The Lord God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed in everything He says to you. ‘And it shall be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.
Acts 24:14 “But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law, and that is written in the Prophets; having a hope in God
Rom 3:31 “Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law”
Acts 26:22 “And so, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place; that the Christ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He should be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people
When Paul says that he “kept the Law”, he was referring to the fact that Moses and the prophets foretold of Christ. and that being a Christian was foretold in the law. In a very real sense it was the Jewish non-Christians who refused to heed Jesus who were in fact rejecting what Moses said!

I’ve made my point, no need to go on circles. If you can’t see that “as his custom was” refers to his keeping Sabbath, then we are following different hermeneutics. The rest is between you and God. Take care

Guys this is the time when the truth should be told as it is.Sabbath was made from the creation please let no one deceive people Gen 2:1-3 and in heaven we will still keep the Sabbath as per Isiah 66:23 its clear so who are we trying to change things which God have already made. Jesus him self was keeping the Sabbath 1 Peter 2:21 he gave us an Example to follow. So why not.Exekiel 22:26-28

\\ If you can’t see that “as his
custom was” refers to his keeping Sabbath, then we are following different
hermeneutics. \\

WRONG!

Our Lord’s custom was GOING TO THE SYNGAGOGUE, as this is the grammatical meaning of the sentence.

Worship is NOT enjoined in the Decalogue, but merely rest from labor, a rest that was extended to one’s slaves and farm animals.

Synagogues developed in the Exile, so they could not have been referred to at Sinai.

OTOH, traditional synagogues have services TWICE DAILY, not just on the Sabbath.

There is no “day” in heaven. Heaven is beyond time and space. In heaven there is the eternal now.
Heb 4:10 for whoever enters God’s rest also ceases from his labors as God did from his.
It was Paul’s custom to go to the Synagogue on the Sabbath to preach Christ to unbelievers.

Great Jimmy! I was wondering about this my self thanks for the info…

I am not an adventist, I was raised a sunday keeper , but have studied this question for a long time. And of course, the catholic church changed the sabbath- who else? There is not even support in the scriptures that Christ rose on sunday. And there is not one single proof of any keeping of sunday (  or lord´s day ) during the 28 chapters of Acts. If keeping sunday actually was something new and important, we certainly must see it practiced in Acts. Some think the happening in Troas( ch 2o acts ) is the first instance of sunday keeping. But this is totally false. In fact it is a proof against it if anything. They were assembled actually after the sabbath on the evening of saturday and they held a farewell - meal for Paul. He had so much to say that he kept preaching all through the night until sunday morning , when he left for a long and strenous walk to reach the ship in Assos. Certainly not a good example if he intended the sunday to be kept holy!
Jesus clearly expects the sabbath to be intact during the last days Mtth.24:20 , and it will clearly be kept in the soon coming world, the kingdom of God: Es 66:23.

Act 20:7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and he prolonged his speech until midnight.
Act 20:8 There were many lights in the upper chamber where we were gathered.
The passage clearly says it was the first day of the week. The listened to Paul preach, and to break bread.
Clearly a worship service.
Mat 24:20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath.
The gates of Jerusalem would be closed on the Sabbath, making it very difficult to leave the city.

Michael Shearer: yes, it is clearly on the first day of the week. But as you certainly know the new day in Jewish reconing ( and the whole world at the time ) started after sunset . That means that this assembly would be kept on the evening after the sabbath had closed, actually saturday evening. And Paul kept his speach going all night til the morning. This will have to be our sunday morning. But then he leaves early to walk quite some distance to reach his ship in Assos. Clearly they began this gettogether , which seems more like a farewell party whit a meal rather than formal sevice. And there is no other possibility than that it is saturday evening ( otherwise there had to be written “the second day they were assembled ” which means sunday evening )Whatever way you read it there is no support at all for a sunday morning service. Either it is saturday evening and the night before sunday ( in our reconing )or it is sunday evening to monday morning.

Here in Acts 20:7 the church gathered together on Sunday for the purpose of of a common meal? Not likely Notice 1 Cor 11:33-34: “when you come together to eat” is exactly parallel to Acts 20:7
Acts 20:11 “and had broken the bread and eaten” This is the Lord’s supper. Exactly the same language as in 1 Corinthians 11:20-22; 33-34 “eat the Lord’s Supper” “in your eating” “when you come together to eat”
In Acts 2:46 it is not the Lord’s supper but a common meal. Notice they were individually having people over to the their houses for foot after they had all gathered together in the temple. The Greek word for meals means common food and is never used of the Lord’s supper.

We can worship god any day of the week.  The command to keep the sabbath holy did not change.  The church changing the day is wrong.  No matter what Paul did on any day the sabbath stands or gods very words are meaningless.

Catholics have Mass every day. However the 7th day Sabbath was nailed to the cross. The Church didn’t change it.
“Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. On the first day of every week let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.” (1 Cor 16:1-2)

Sabbatarians would never get the passage wrong if it said: “Every Sabbath, let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.”

This proves the natural reading of the passage is the collection taken within a Christian assembly.
There is nothing that would prevent this from being the weekly church offering while assembled.

The sabbath was not nailed to the cross.  Christ himself said he did not come to change anything.  So neither should we.  The church did not change the sabbath, they changed the day of worship, Jewish people still go by the sabbath as they should.  Christians can worship any day they want, they are not bound by the laws they Jewish people are.  But, these are gods laws, and if one wants to get to know god and build a relationship with him, he should read his laws.  Faith does not teach us what pleases god. Prayer is vital, and understanding his laws even though we are not bound by many of them,  is equally vital.

Problem with the article is that there’s no Scripture support to claim that “the Lord’s Day” of Revelation 1 is Sunday, but as Jamie pointed out, there is New Testament Scripture support that “the Lord’s Day” is the Seventh-day Sabbath (Matt 12:8).

The Catholics only have confusion to stand on because they officially recognise questionable traditions as superior to the authority of the Bible. As long as they do this, they really have no Christian legitimacy.

I know the Roman Catholic system is huge but sorry, God does not have a blessing for it; it’s Roman, not Christian. Better change the name.

Ken, a grateful, grace grounded Sevent-day Adventist.

Mat 12:8 For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.” The passage states that Christ is Lord of the Sabbath and not the Lord’s Day is the Sabbath. Also it is the Catholic Church, not ‘Roman Catholic’. Roman refers to the rite. There is also the ‘Eastern’ rite, which is not Roman.

Gentiles (heathen, aliens, strangers, foreigners, outsiders, Hebrew: goyim) are those of the nations other than Ysryl. Gentiles are grafted into the nation of Ysryl and are no longer gentiles: Wherefore remember, that you being IN TIME PAST Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time you were without the Messiah, being aliens from the commonwealth of Ysryl, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without YHWH in the world: But now in the Messiah Yeshua you who sometimes were far off are made near by the blood of the Messiah. For he is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the deep hatred toward the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of two one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto YHWH in one body by the execution devise, having slain the deep hatred thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were near. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore YOU ARE NO MORE STRANGERS (gentiles, heathens, aliens, strangers, outsiders, Hebrew: ‘goyim’) and foreigners, but fellowcitizens [with Ysryl]; with the saints, and of the household of YHWH [or Ysryl]; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Yeshua the Messiah himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together growes unto a set apart temple in YHWH: In whom you also are built together for an habitation of YHWH through the Spirit (Ephesians 2:11-22). From the very beginning YHWH’s instruction (torah, law, commandment, precept, charge, testimony, teaching) was not “for the Jews only” as many erroneously teach.
