A major Vatican conference on combating sexual abuse will be held next year at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome on the theme “Towards healing and renewal - a global response to the problem of sexual abuse, and the protection of the vulnerable”.
The Vatican says the symposium will be important in helping “bishops and religious superiors adequately respond to requests to bishops’ conferences made by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to prepare effective directives and pastoral plans on the theme of sexual abuse.”
The conference, which will be supported by various Vatican dicasteries, will bring together experts from some of the world’s great academic institutions. It’s due to take place in February 2012.
More details are expected to be revealed on Saturday by the Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, and the Promoter of Justice (the Vatican’s “Attorney General”) at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Msgr. Charles J. Scicluna.
The press conference will also be attended by, among others, Father Francois Xavier Dumortier, Rector of the Gregorian, Father Hans Zollner, Dean of the Institute of Psychology and Head of the Preparatory Committee of the symposium, Baroness Sheila Hollins, professor of psychiatry at St. George’s University London, and Msgr. Klaus Peter Franzl, the Archdiocese of Monaco of Bavaria.
Experts from the Virtus program, a U.S. body developed by the National Catholic Risk Retention Group to combat sexual abuse of children in the Church, are expected to lead workshops in 4 languages, together with other experts in the field. Participants will hear from psychologists, pastoral staff, lawyers, theologians and representatives from diverse regions of the world.
The Vatican says that among the objectives of the conference is to build “a new center of multilingual e-learning, available to Church leaders, for the information and dissemination of resources and best practices to respond to the problem.”

The issue is not more conferences on how to deal with the fallout; the issue is dealing with the SOURCE of the problem, which is a centuries old theology of sexual repression. The priests themselves are subjected to this theology and the fruit is what we see- repressed sexual desires. These are God-given desires, and not dirty or in need of purification, but in need of being expressed in appropriate ways through loving relationships. Why is the church afraid of this? Because it would bring an end to the power of the clergy and bring true democracy to the church, something that exists in many other branches of Christianity where sexual crimes are much less among clergy. Why are we as Catholics tolerating this?

Concerning the vatican and their plans, this sex abuse problem is not about the safety of children or the love for the people. It’s about money first and gaining the peoples trust inturn to control them period! I am a christian and the word of God tells me to love everyone and that i will do.It is taught by the roman catholic church that, every catholics first duty is to obey,love and serve their church by which they’ve brainwashed millions from youth. The real church is; The body of believers in jesus christ worldwide not a body of believers in men or a physical institution. we trust in the true word of God not men (king james version). The vatican has lost a great deal of money because of their many sex abuse cases in which victims has come forward and they intend on getting their money back and then some. I incourage everyone to do an exstensive search on the men who help to pass laws concerning sex offenses and you will find that, most of them are catholics ignorantly obeying the lies and deceptions of their leaders. The roman catholic church is todays roman empire. My brothers and sisters in christ you must study the word of God yourselves and not let men interpret it for you. 2-timothy chap 2:15 says ‘study to shew thyself approved unto God,,, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth’ (KJV). now when you most of the other bible versions, you’ll se that the word ‘study’ is removed and that’s the most important word in the verse. please seek the lord for yourselves! In revelation chap 13, the beast out of the water is the roman empire and the mouth that spoke blasphmey against God is the pope and roman catholic institution. The answer is put these pedophile clergy in jail. The Catholic Church continues to act as if prayer is the answer. Other pedophiles go to jail where they belong.

Johanna J Smith, I agree with you that Paediphilles shoild be put in prison but if you believe that the Catholic Church is the only organisation covering up this evil you are completely wrong. The US publicSchool ststem has been covering up this evil for years and nothing has been done, Dr Charol Shakeshaft in her report to the Us Dept of Education 2004 says that a child in the New York Public School system is 100 times more likely to suffer abuse in that system than by a priest in the Catholic Church, and yet none of those Teachers is suspended let alone be jailed, Now Johanna J Smith MA are you interest in stamping out Child abuse or do you just believe Child Abuse is carried out anywhere in any other Organisation

I’d like to think that some priests were defrocked but the general public didn’t hear about it because the media wanted to paint the church in a bad light.
