With Italy under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, this was the first time in decades that the Via Crucis was not held at the Colosseum, a Roman amphitheater associated with the Christian martyrs.
Pope Francis chose a group of Italian high-school students to write the meditations for his Good Friday Way of the Cross at the Colosseum.
‘The Way of the Cross alone defeats sin, evil and death, for it leads to the radiant light of Christ’s resurrection and opens the horizons of a new and fuller life. It is the way of hope, the way of the future,” the Pope said on July 29, adding, ‘And I would like you to be sowers of hope.’
The Holy Father spoke of the passion of Christ and the suffering of Christians during the Way of the Cross on Good Friday.
