COMMENTARY: The ancient basilica welcomes a new wave of pilgrims, drawn by a renewed devotion to Our Lady in this special year of grace.
After blessing the faithful, he entered the chapel that houses the Marian icon, traditionally attributed to St. Luke, and, kneeling, prayed for a few minutes before placing a bouquet of flowers at the feet of the Blessed Mother’s image.
The simple wooden casket was transported in a popemobile-style pickup truck and greeted to applause and cheers of ‘goodbye, Pope Francis,’ and ‘good journey, Francis,’ from a small crowd gathered just outside the Vatican.
COMMENTARY: Of all the great basilicas of Rome, the one dedicated to the Blessed Mother was his favorite.
The papal basilica, also known as the 'Bethlehem of the West,' houses both the venerated icon of Mary and relics of Christ’s crib.
The Basilica of St. Mary Major is home to the relic of the Holy Cradle and the icon of Salus Populi Romani; it has been an important place for Pope Francis, who prays there before and after all of his apostolic journeys.
Pope Francis wouldn’t be the first pope to have his mortal remains be interred in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
The most recent pope to be buried in this basilica was laid to rest there more than 350 years ago.
COMMENTARY: The Holy Father chose Aug. 5 for his visit to Fatima to link two of the great Marian shrines of the world.
