Msgr. Thomas Powers, from Connecticut, begins his tenure.
Since 2015, Msgr. Powers has been back in Connecticut, where he serves as vicar general and moderator of the curia, and as a parish pastor, in the Diocese of Bridgeport.
The dismissal of the suit was granted on multiple grounds, including because the former seminarian failed to provide adequate evidence that the New York court has personal jurisdiction over the NAC and its administrators, since the school’s primary place of business is in Rome.
The Vatican’s Congregation for Clergy is expected to name Father Harman’s successor in the coming months, in consultation with the board of governors.
Commenting on the announcement, Father Harman said he felt both blessed and humbled to have been asked to serve on the faculty and as rector of the NAC.
In his homily, Cardinal Gregory noted that from the earliest days of Church history, deacons have been required to “demonstrate by their lives that they were men of integrity, responsible, holy, and trustworthy.”
The rector also informed that "the rotation of special Masses on Saturdays will be modified so that celebration of Novus Ordo Mass in Latin will replace the former ‘Extraordinary Form’ Mass.”
Msgr. James Checchio will be installed at a Mass on May 3.
Father Peter Harman, an Illinois native, made his oath of fidelity and profession of faith on Feb. 28.
The Holy Father will be the guest of honor at a May 2 day of prayer and reflection on the life of the Spanish missionary at the Pontifical North American College.
