During the in-flight press conference on his return flight to Rome from Iqaluit, Francis said while he had not used the word ‘genocide,’ he indeed had described one. ‘I apologized; I asked forgiveness for this work, which was genocide.’
COMMENTARY: The Holy Father said the Church needs to avoid collaborating with state power, which seeks to destroy the ‘natural attachment of peoples to their values.’
‘It is our desire to renew the relationship between the Church and the indigenous peoples of Canada, a relationship marked both by a love that has borne outstanding fruit and, tragically, deep wounds that we are committed to understanding and healing.’
