Amidst the decline of Catholicism in France, the reconstruction of the Abbey of St. Wandrille emerges as a powerful sign of renewal and hope for the future of the Church in France.
The historic abbey, which in 2024 is celebrating the eighth centenary of the consecration of its basilica dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, has retained an undiminished attractiveness.
As one monk put it, ‘I go before Jesus, and he takes care of the rest.’
The diocese said that while it has closed the monastery and thus ended its ecclesial mission, it is aware that the monastery was also established as a civil association enrolled in the Civil Registry and so “it belongs to them to determine its future as a civil association.”
According to Bishop Bozo, the new foundation promises to be a real blessing for a very de-Christianized rural region, completely devoid of male contemplative communities since the Revolution.
