Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore issued a letter to the Catholics of his archdiocese on Wednesday urging the faithful to reject Maryland’s Question 1, a ballot initiative that he labeled an “extreme step of enshrining the legality of abortion” in the state’s constitution.
In his role with the bishops’ pro-life committee, Archbishop Lori has spoken out repeatedly in favor of assistance for pregnant women and against President Joe Biden’s advancement of abortion.
The chair of the U.S. bishops’ pro-life committee responded to the order on Saturday.
“On the contrary, choosing life creates a society that looks to the future with hope, a society where a woman is never forced to choose between her future and her unborn child,” said Archbishop Lori.
Consecrated on May 31, 1821, the basilica cornerstone was laid in 1806 by Bishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States.
Bishop Bransfield categorically denied that inappropriately touched a 9-year-old girl during a pilgrimage to Washington in 2012.
The diocesan report includes Cardinal Edward Egan, who prioritized the protection of the diocese’s reputation and assets over justice, transparency, and accountability.
