Imagine This…

The Daily Mail reported last week that Liverpool’s Anglican cathedral recently rang out John Lennon’s pop tune “Imagine” on its bells.

The choice of music struck the Daily Mail as odd, and for good reason. The opening line of Lennon’s 1971 anti-religion anthem is: “Imagine there’s no heaven.”

It’s a bit difficult to imagine why Liverpudlian Anglicans think “Imagine” is suitable church-bell music. Maybe they just wanted to play some “Mind Games” in honor of one of their city’s most famous sons, or maybe some of Lennon’s “Instant Karma” zapped the cathedral’s bell ringers.

One person who wholeheartedly supported the cathedral’s musical initiative was Yoko Ono.

Reported the Daily Mail, “Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, said on her Facebook page that the idea was ‘so beautiful, it made me choke up.’”
