Fresh from his much-written about trip to Medjugorge, Vienna Cardinal Archbishop Christoph Schönborn will be presenting lectures at at least two Catholic universities during a trip to the U.S. over the next week.
Christoph Schönborn is visiting the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas January 30 and 31 as a guest of the Little Sisters of the Lamb.
On Sunday, Jan. 31, he will celebrate noon Mass at St. Benedict’s Abbey Church in Atchison, Kan. At 2:30 p.m. he will deliver the lecture, “Pope Benedict, Regensburg, and the Controversy of Creation and Evolution,” in the college’s O’Malley-McAllister Auditorium. Benedictine is also presenting him with the prestigious Cross of the Order of St. Benedict award.
In 2005, Christoph Schönborn sparked a debate on evolution with a New York Times article on the subject. In 2007, he published “Chance or Purpose? Creation, Evolution, and a Rational Faith.”
On Sunday afternoon, Christoph Schönborn will preside and preach at Solemn Vespers at Savior Pastoral Center in Kansas City. Priests from throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska have been invited to attend.
On Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 3:30 p.m., Christoph Schönborn will give a lecture at The Catholic University of America. The lecture, “Christianity – Alien Presence or Foundation of the West?” will be given in Great Room A of the Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center. The lecture is being sponsored by Catholic University’s schools of theology and religious studies, canon law and philosophy.
President of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference, Christoph Schönborn is known for his work as editorial secretary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. He is one of the youngest members of the Catholic Church’s College of Cardinals, and as such, his name is frequently mentioned among the papabile – the circle of potential future popes.
Whether he’s a future papal contender or not, it is interesting to note that both Karol Wojtyla and Joseph Ratzinger had visited the U.S. on lecture tours prior to their ascendancy to the papacy. In 1976, three years prior to his election, Karol Wojtyla was invited by The Catholic University of America’s dean of the School of Philosophy, Jude Dougherty, to give an academic lecture. In 1999, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger visited the U.S. delivering a lecture on “Faith and Culture” at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif.

I think he’s “running for pope”...This is how to become known to cardinal-electors and future cardinal-electors in countries other than your own. That he recently made headlines with his Medjugorje adventure insures that he won’t be ignored here in the States…
His Eminence is partial to clowns and balloons at Holy Mass. Certainly would not be my first choice to fill the Fisherman’s shoes. Veni Creator Spiritus!
That he recently made headlines with his Medjugorje adventure insures that he won’t be selected as pope.
The Church is Austria is a mess and Mass attendance is nose-diving. Priests openly rebelled when the Holy Father selected an orthodox priest to fill an episcopal vacancy in a diocese within the Vienna province - the good Cardinal’s very back yard. He should never be considered for the Papacy and neither should Benedictine College give him an award. His remarks in Medjugorje were and are scandalous.
William says “His eminence is partial to clowns and balloons at Holy Mass,” which is certainly not true.
William: I saw that apalling video too, but come on: He was clearly ambushed at a student-run Mass somewhere and he certainly hasn’t introduced that kind of thing himself. The fact that there is no second video like it is hugely signficant.
There are sites that try to destroy Mother Teresa’s reputation and Pope John Paul II’s also via Masses where they were ambushed.
Oops ... meant to say:
At Pope Benedict XVI’s Washington, D.C., Mass, John Kerry received communion, among others. Do you jump on websites and say that he’s “partial to giving communion to pro-abortion activists”?
Or when Blessed Mother Teresa is mentioned, do you say, “She’s great ... if you like praying to Buddha instead of God,” the way that website does?
Be fair! Be charitable! As you judge, so shall you be judged ...
His Eminence, Christoph Schonborn is a gracious and learned man. I had the privilege of participating in the International Priests retreat in Ars with him as the main presenter. His talks were informative and well delivered in perfect French (he also speaks perfect English). The content was based on Scripture, tradition, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John Vianney, and St. Therese of Lisieux. I was also impressed by his spiritual presence at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and in his fatherly interaction with ordinary diocesan priests. Furthermore, his own younger more conservative priests speak well of him.
Certainly, those who attend his talks in the USA will also come away much impressed. So let us be gracious hosts and welcome this distinguished prelate with good manners, avoiding idle speculation about the next Papal election. After all, our present Pope, who is a good friend of the Austrian Cardinal, is still a hale and hearty Bavarian. May he live for a hundred years.

Mons. Schönborn really loves his father!

Somehow, I was under the impression that the Holy Spirit picked the next pope, well, actually, all of them. (Some wonderful, some not so wonderful, but…His choice.) And may Pope Benedict see at least l00 years!
Re: The balloon Mass ... remember, Schonborn was ambushed at a student Mass. He is not a proponent of this kind of thing, just said Mass where others went nuts. Significantly, there is no other such Schonborn Mass.
Re: Who picks the Pope. Christ forgives our sins ... but there’s a priest there, too. Christ confects the Eucharist ... but not without a priest. Christ brings us into the Church ... but not without a priest, parents and godparents.
The Holy Spirit picks the Pope ... but I believe there are cardinals involved, too ...
That said, speculation as to who is next is absurd, pointless and nearly always wrong.
