There has been a lot of commentary on Glenn Beck’s “restoring honor” rally in Washington this past weekend. President Obama ignored it. Newscasters spun it. And people argued over the size of it.
But hands down, the silliest thing anyone has said on this topic (and maybe any topic) comes from the politically liberal commentator Bill Press.
As the topic turned to the rally, it was noted that most of the rally focused on a return to God and patriotism.
Speaking on CNN, Press said that speaking about God in a ‘sacred’ space like the Lincoln Memorial is ‘inappropriate.’
Talk of God is inappropriate at a “sacred” place? A sacred place?
Many people have rightly been pointing out that this would come as a surprise to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. since his “I have a dream speech” has multiple references to God in it.
But I think the prohibition on God-speak at the Lincoln Memorial would come as an even bigger surprise to Lincoln himself. After all, Lincoln second inaugural address in carved in stone at the memorial. It reads in part…
If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? It just doesn’t get stupider than this. He’s old enough to have read at least SOME history - in elementary school, memorization of at least part of the Gettysburg address was expected.
Guess he played hookey on the days they covered Lincoln.

Press’s commentary on news events seems inappropriate on a news channel.

This reminds me of a time when I visited Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Tourists were acting as if it was a museum and talking in loud voices while walking around. We had Mass in the chapel behind the main altar and the priests from the cathedral were all wearing jeans under their vestments. Afterward, we went to Sainte Chapelle which had been the chapel of St. Louis. It is no longer a church, but a museum and when you spoke in there the guards told you to keep your voice down! Very bizarre. The secular was treated like the sacred and vice versa.
While absurd comments from newscasters are always good for a chuckle. Let’s please not forget that none of the mainstream news outlets, including Fox which pays Mr. Beck’s bills, are friends of Catholics. Mr. Becks rally is not good news that Catholic’s should be revelling in. There is no political party that faithful Catholics in this county can look to to uphold what we should believe. Nor is Mr. Beck, whose loyalties are suspect at best, a person to look to for direction. Be a bit more discerning.
And to think that Bill once attempted to be a priest! Pretty sure….
Steven, do you have a problem with the virtues of faith, hope and charity? Because the messenger will always be a sinner. But the message to return to God and become an honorable people by growing in virtue is a good and very timely message.

You urge me to “Be a bit more discerning.” Based on what? Did I even comment on Beck or the rally?
But I will be more discerning. I will likely skip your comments in the future.
Becks focus may very well be influenced by our Founding Fathers and the history of the formation of our form of government. Catholics would do well to read Dr Skousen’s book “5000 year leap” which is an easy read and covers this very well. John Adams pointed out why the future of the United States depended upon the level of virtue and morality maintained among the people. He (John Adams) said, ” Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” The Founding Fathers realized that one cannot legislate morality and that the success of this form of government requires the discipline that is found in religious people. That is Becks message - return to God as the first step in finding yourself and then becoming a good citizen of this great country.
there is a great deal of stuff you can read about lincoln. and it can take a while to get through all of the revised history. but when you get there you will find that lincoln is not much different from obama. the real lincoln subverted the constitution, imprisoned political opponents, impossed all out war against his own citizens, women and children included, won his election with the german vote, which was recruted and planted in certain voting districts so as to swing the electoral vote. and those germans, without citizenship, were able to vote because the voting rules were changed to allow it. and to top it all of, the war was not about slavery, it was about power. the northern bank and industrial interest owned Lincoln just like they owned Bush and Bush and Bill and yes, President Berry. our very fist middle eastern president. you didn’t miss that bit on lincoln in grade school or high school because you were out that day, they didn’t teach it. but you can find out why they didn’t teach it by reading John Taylor Gatto’s book, The Under Ground History of American Education. it is a big book though. You can start with His new book, Weapons of Mass Instruction. You have been dupped. Get Undupped.
Wow - I subscribed to the NCR in the 70’s because it was the voice of progressive Catholics who were concerned with social justice - ya know, the kinda stuff Jesus taught.
Now it’s the voice of self righteous right wing of the Church. And speaking of history - take a look at the early Christian communities where women were treated as equals. It was only later that patriarchy took hold - guess Jesus was too big a threat to the thousands of years of the submission of women. And we’re still living with the backlash.
I agree wholeheartedly with Jennifer O. Also there are many Catholics working for Fox news—check it out. Maybe some of you had better listen to Father Groeschel on EWTN (he is the best). I think Glenn Beck did a terrific job Saturday and he deserves credit for it—-by the way though he is now a Mormon, he was baptized in the Catholic church when he was born. ;o) Glenn was not pushing his faith, he was talking about God and Country. Why are some Catholics so small-minded,that they can’t or won’t listen to people of other denominations or faiths.(maybe unsure in their own Faith?)

Sounds like someone does not know his own nation’s history! Exactly why Beck needed to call the nation to honor. Exactly why so many priests, pastors, rabbis, and immans had to join hands and call the nation to its knees.
Foolishness abounds. Lord, hear the collective prayers of the good people of our nation who yearn to breathe free and are being told that “sacred spaces” should exclude their prayers.
@Mr. Archbold, my remarks were not directed at you, sir. I sincerely apologize for not making that clear. My comments were directed to those posting as it seemed there was a definite Beck-ite lean in the comments. @Sue - doctrinal relativism is at the root of many problems in both the nation and its Catholic communities. Doctrine matters. As you mention, Beck is a Mormon, ergo, he is not a Christian. His faith denies the divinity of Christ. That is problematic to me and it should be to other Christians as well. As to Bill O’Reilly…Nancy Pelosi makes the same claim.

Wow. I can think of a lot of things to criticize Glenn Beck for, even though I really enjoy his shows. But to say it wrong for him to mention the sacred on sacred/patriot grounds at a sacred/patriotic memorial to a president known for him patriotism and faith is just, well, ‘Doublespeak.’ I imagine Press as a modern day Janus, with two faces, neither of which can be trusted.
What? Didn’t you know that the supreme court decided that God isn’t allowed anywhere outside of church and even there they grudgingly let His name be spoken? Didn’t you know that Mr Obama has determined that “we are not a Christian nation” and therefore that stuff on the Lincoln Memorial no longer is relevant? Haven’t you been taught the new communist version of history where things are changed to suit the present government rulers? Where have you been comrade? @ Stephen M.: Please listen to Fr. Groeschel, who has friends amongst the different faiths (Jew, Islam, Protestant denominations, etc) This week he had a Jewish man on who had a Catholic wife in a nursing home and this Jewish man goes to Catholic Mass every day and prays for her. You have to talk and associate with non Catholics to bring them into the church, & understand them. This Jew will not join the CC but he believes Jesus was a great prophet and honors Him for that. I married into a Protestant family and we all respected one another’s beliefs. In the end, we all believe that we are created by God and how a person believes is between that one person and God. When I was young Protestants did not accept Catholics or the Nuns or Priests. They had weird beliefs about us. Today they do because we have had dialogues together—it is the only way to understand one another.
Speaking of Bill Press in journalism circles is inappropriate. As a matter of fact, speaking of Bill Press in intellectual circles is inappropriate.

And their “research” conclusions are a joke. These people are dangerous hate mongers, and I don’t give a damn what they claim their religion to be. And they sure don’t practice anything that Jesus taught.

That is life as it always has been. You do have to pick and choose by checking things out and there are ways of doing that also. You just stated some propaganda above and showed hate, bigotry and intolerance. I will tell you what I do know about O’Reilly and that is he does give a great deal of his money to the poor. Also, as an Independent, he is very fair in his analysis of the news and of the politicos. As to the Catholic Church, sure they can sell every artifact or land they own and makes lots of money to give to the poor, then the poor spends all of that and then what. Also the Catholic Church does more for the poor than any other organization. No one gets ahead in this world if they are handed money and things, only those who work for what they get respects it. (and what a wonderful feeling of accomplishment) A short example—my 25 yr-old grandson had his bicycle stolen from his porch. He was very angry and said “take my car, take my DVD, take anything I own, but don’t take my bicycle, that is the first thing I ever had that I bought with my own money”. As to Beck, he did accomplish a lot by bringing God and patriotism right on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and if I am not mistaken, he paid for it all or most himself. As far as “right wing Catholics” go, hmmm I believe Ted Kennedy was NOT a right wing conservative but a liberal and there are many more Catholics like him. Just because a person is Catholic does not mean that they do not accept gays or people of other faiths. I have all of those in my family gays, Jews, etc. and we all get along famously. God Bless.
In 5 years time you won’t hear the name Bill Press or if you do you will ask “who is or who was he? ” But God’s name will go on forever. Press is just another “ant” amongst the many who have it wrong and always will. Pray for him.
Lucky grandson with his car, his DVD’s and his bicycle. There are millions of people in the world who don’t have food, and the Catholic Church has supported the regimes that keep them poor. If you study the histories of South and Central America, you will see the role the Church has played in creating more poor people than helping them.
And the assumption that poor people don’t work is also not true.
The Church has accumulated a huge amount of wealth and it needs to share it. I’m not suggesting handouts either. I’m suggesting compensation and reparations for all the grief they’ve caused, all in the name of Christianity. Jesus would be appalled at the behavior of Church. It’s everything he was not!
And accepting people is one thing - denying them their civil rights is quite something else.

My parents went through the “great depression”—I was in grade school at the time and I remember—-we were poor and Dad and Mom worked hard to raise 6 children, feed and dress them. When Dad lost his business, he worked in a diner washing dishes. Anything to put food on the table. What I was inferring is that if all of the monies of the Catholic Church was given to the poor, then what—-The poor need jobs, just as in today’s economy there are a lot of unemployed who need jobs. You are the one who insinuated that the Catholic Church should sell its properties and give to the poor. I would like to know what regimes you are talking about that the CC supports. If you are a Bible reading person then you know that Jesus said “the poor will always be with us”. Yes it is society’s fault, but society can only do so much. There are many Mother Theresa’s in the world today regardless and do much for the poor. Guess we can go on and on about this…...
I’ve watched Glen Beck and have grown in my faith and understanding of the constitution. If only I had had teachers that I could understand as well. I believe he joined the Mormon religion because it was the only religion that frowned on the use of alcohol. He had a problem and was desperate for help. If only other people would follow his example!

And Dot - if you’re learning about the Constituion from Glenn Beck, you’re in real trouble! Check out some of the claims and innuendos this man makes. He’s not a journalist, or even a very intelligent person. He is self serving, and loves to play on people’s fears, and ignorance. He uses the same techniques as Al Quaeda in order to persuade vulnerable Muslims that the need to fight the “evil doers” (to quote George Bush).
Fundamentalism is growing, and of a major concern to me. Because it affects my safety and security. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalism - all the same. Moderate and reasonable people must speak out against it or become the victims of it.
@Sandra Currie: sorry I mixed you up on that—he bought the bicycle when he was in high school with money that he earned himself—his parents did not pay for it and therefore he really appreciated it, since he worked hard after school hours and weekends to buy it. His car and DVD player he bought as a working adult and he earned those also.
As to your last paragraph above to Dot—I agree with you as to Fundamentalism and I wish people would know the difference between fundamentalism and Evangelical. Not all Fundamentals are totally wrong but too many seem to go off the deep end—I have seen it myself in my church.
When does this liberal insanity end? Just when you think nothing more stupid can be said, here comes another one. Bill Press is just another lapdog who has slurped the kool-aid. Pray hard for these people. God help us all!
