In the wake of the mass murder of seven babies by a Philadelphia abortionist I have to ask where’s the Presidential press conference? Where’s the nationally televised memorial? Where are the t-shirts with the catchy slogan? Where’s the media blame game? Where’s the feature pieces in national magazines on the societal implications of the murders?
Seriously. I’m wondering why isn’t the murder of seven babies of similar national implications to the horrible murders in Tuscon?
There are currently 15,000 mentions of Jared Loughner in the news recently, according to Google. But as of Sunday night there are less than 1,400 mentions of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. That’s 10 percent. Truly, silence is the deadliest bias.
Shortly after the Tuscon murders journalists, talking heads, and several politicians wasted no time chatting up the far flung societal implications of the tragedy in Arizona mainly focusing the blame for the murders on the “violent” rhetoric of the right wing. But isn’t it a heck of a lot shorter logical leap to suggest that strong pro-abortion rhetoric contributed to an atmosphere that made the violence perpetrated by Gosnell a possibility? Seriously, does 30 years of calling babies “blobs of tissue” have no effect on the culture?
Journalists picked out several politicians to blame for the Tuscon tragedy. Well, in Philadelphia we have the government on every level turning a blind eye to Gosnell’s practice despite several incidents that should have raised a red flag. But the government did nothing. Isn’t that a story? Isn’t that worth investigating? The angle that Gosnell’s industry is government sponsored and government protected hasn’t seemed to raise the interest of anyone.
And nobody seems to be asking whether Gosnell is truly an anomaly. Nobody’s asking whether similar incidents are happening all around the country while the government entrusted with overseeing abortion clinics turns a blind eye.
And if President Obama was mostly concerned with bringing the country together, there is no more culturally divisive issue than the killing of babies.
So why are so many ignoring the issue? The problem is that many don’t really think Gosnell is a monster. If he did the same thing five minutes earlier they’d have no problem. If the baby was still in the womb rather than on a blood stained operating table it would be labeled a medical procedure rather than murder. For them it’s not a morality issue, it’s a geography one.
Jared Loughner did a horrible thing in the name of nothing. Gosnell did a horrible thing in the name of choice. Methods aside - they endorse it.
Truth is, we have much more to fear from the Kermit Gosnells of the world than we do from the Jared Loughners.

i couldn’t agree more and have posted this to fb and will forward to local paper
I made a similar point recently - wondering aloud if there would be any debates, or even conversations, in the hallways of Congress of regulation in the abortion industry as there has been regarding guns since Tucson. The abortion industry - don’t you love the irony of that use of word - as it is merely a place of work, as if it actually creates something rather than destroys it!.
Back to my point - abortion remains the only multi-million dollar industry and medical procedure with the real threat of death to the mothers (not to mention the babies) that remains unregulated and unmonitored. Tattoo parlors get more visits from the health department than an abortion clinic ever does.
On this day of the March, I would welcome anyone in the Congress who has the courage and strength to present legislature in that regard. Just the threat of a surprise visit from a local health official would limit the damages the butcher shops such as Gosnells ran. Does anyone really think his is the only one??
Amen, amen, amen!! The double-standard in the media and among politicians is sickening and pervasive. Need further evidence? Today, the 38th March for Life will bring between 200,000 and 300,000 Americans of every race, religion, age, and socio-economic level will converge on Washington D.C. to pray, rally and peacefully march to bring attention to the very killing that Matt speaks of here. Since the tragic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of Jan 22, 1973, 38 years of legalized killing of babies has resulted in over 50 million American children willfully exterminated. Will it get covered by ANY media outlet other than EWTN? If history is any indication, there will be hardly a word or a picture of coverage. And the coverage that will be shown is skewed with liberal, pro-choice bias. Let’s continue to pray for equity in media and politics, and moreover, an end to the tragedy of abortion.
“Go get ‘em, Matt!!!
I posted the first paragraph on my Facebook also!
Why expect consistency from someone whose morals are based on expediency and self-advancement? Did you know that the servant of the devil celebrated the right to murder one’s own child this weekend ?
Total homicides in U.S. by deranged psychopaths claiming constitutional justification, 1973-2011: Approximately 500.
Total homicides in U.S. by sane physicians claiming constitutional justification, 1973-2010: Approximately 50,000,000.
Any questions?
Thanks, Matt. Emailed my senators and will post the first paragraph on facebook as well with your permission.
Feel free.
You’re not seeing anything in the secular media on this story for the same reason you weren’t seeing anything the previous three decades!
This case is by no means an anomoly. The fact it made any news is a surpirse since this goes on in every state in the union.
Saturday night I watched “Blood Money,” a documentary narrated by Alveda King, on EWTN. The testimony by Carol Everett, a former abortion clinic owner in Texas, was every bit and more shocking than the Gosnell case. She provided a litany of filthy conditions, ruptured uteruses, doctors coverups, etc. One woman had her bowels pulled out during an abortion and was rushed across town in a car to a hospital far away to avoid publicity. Seven doctors worked to save the woman, and all seven covered up the incident.
Horrific, horrific, horrific. Pennsylvania government officials were not alone in covering up.
Matt, you make a great series of points in your article. I’m from England. the story has been on the news once. The silence? Really, what can they say?—Actually, the legalisation of Abortion was wrong and we have the blood of countless millions of babies on our hands! They won’t touch (they can’t) this story cause the repercussions could be huge. I wonder what discussions are taking place in news rooms? The silence is very, very telling. The deaths of 7 ‘wanted’ babies would be an international tradjedy.
Matthew,
Spot on thank you. BUT does the mainstream media and government officials read the Register and, therefore, this article?
How will these politicians respond to God on their judgment day - for not taking care of these babies God is sending us. When will the day come and they call a ‘baby’ a ‘baby’
None of his victims were Senators; those in power hate to be reminded of their own mortality.
Actually, if you want to talk about inciting murder with your rhetoric, how about “ensuring fetal demise”? This is how abortionists routinely refer to injecting drugs into the baby’s heart to ensure that they will be born dead.
And how about Barack Obama’s words in opposition to the Born Alive Infants Protection Act?
He opposed mandating care for infants who survive abortion in the grounds that such measures are “simply to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion.”
Doesn’t that sound like giving Kermit Gosnell the green light to “complete the abortion procedure”?
This was a good article. I shall forward it to my Facebook page as well.
Great article Matt. I, too, have been wondering where the outrage is about this abortionist. If the media won’t get upset about the babies killed, how about sticking up for women’s rights for once? Oh, I forgot. That’s just a cover.
Thanks for the opinion piece. The same thoughts came to me as I listened to the news all that day. The little child was sort of a foot note for most of the day. It seems that the older you are, the more value you have as a person. What ever happened to “For with God there is no favoratism”? As we Catholics are taught, we can not increase or decrease our value in the eyes of God. He loves us all the same and infanitly. God Bless…
Billye, Actually He loves the little ones MOST! They are the reason He puts up with the rest of us!
Matt, I thought the headline was: All Mass -Murders- Are Not Created Equal. Equally true. Yesterdy I posted this article to the BBC and Sky news in London, asking why there has been so little coverage of the story.
No reply as yet.
May I ask?
How would the media reaction differ had the baby-killer been a nurse?
Are doctors above the law?
