Pope Francis met Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI today at Castel Gandolfo, arriving at the papal summer residence by helicopter shortly after noon.
According to Vatican Information Service:
"At noon today, the Holy Father Francis travelled by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo to meet and have lunch with Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. Accompanying Benedict XVI to greet Pope Francis on his arrival were Bishop Marcello Semeraro of Albano, Italy, and Dr. Saverio Petrillo, director of the Pontifical Villas."
Soon after arrival, Francis and Benedict went to the papal villa's chapel for a moment of prayer. Benedict directed Francis to take the seat and pre-dieu reserved for the Pope but Francis told his predecessor "We are brothers," and they prayed together in the same pew.
Pope Francis gave his predecessor an icon of Our Lady of Humility in gratitude for Benedict's pontificate, and saying that when he saw it "I thought of you."
Lunch followed after a private meeting in the apostolic palace library during which the Pope and the former Pope spoke for 45 minutes.
Francis returned to the Vatican by helicopter shortly before 3pm.

Vatican Radio report:
(Vatican Radio) Speaking exclusively to Vatican Radio, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J., reveals the details of this morning’s historic encounter between Pope Francis and Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus, an encounter he has described as a moment of profound and elevated communion:
“The helicopter landed in Castel Gandolfo heliport, at about 12:15 and the car with the retired Pope approached the helicopter landing site. The Holy Father alighted: he was accompanied by the Substitute [Secretary of State] Msgr. Becciu, by Msgr. Sapienza and Msgr. Alfred Xuereb. As the Pope alighted, the Pope Emeritus approached him and there was a moving embrace between the two.
Then, there followed brief greetings with those other present- the bishop of Albano and the Director of the Pontifical Villas, Mr. Petrillo – they all got in the car: Pope Francis on the right, then place reserved to the Pope, and the Pope emeritus on the left. Msgr. Georg Gänswein, who is Prefect of the Papal Household, travelled in the same car. And so, the car brought the two protagonists of this historic meeting to the elevators and they went up to the apartments and immediately went to the chapel for a moment of prayer.
In the chapel, the Pope emeritus offered the place of honor to Pope Francis, but he said: "We are brothers," and wanted them to kneel together in the same pew. After a short moment of prayer, they then went to the private library where, at about 12:30, the private meeting began. This is the Library where the Pope normally receives important guests in Castel Gandolfo. Pope Francis brought a beautiful icon as a gift for the Pope emeritus. It was an icon of Our Lady of Humility, as a gift for Benedict XVI's great humility. Their discussions ended at 13.15, lasting about 45 minutes. It should be noted, with regard to the clothing, which actually - as we mentioned earlier - the Pope emeritus wears a simple cassock white, without a sash and without a mantella: these are the two details which distinguish his clothing from that of Pope Francis who wears a mantella and sash.
The two Secretaries, and Msgr. Georg and Msgr. Xuereb, are expected to eat lunch with them. Thus the totally private and confidential meeting ended with the discussions in the Library. The Pope Emeritus will also accompany Pope Francis to the heliport, when the time comes for his return. Let us remember that this is not their first meeting: it is their first face-to-face meeting, but Pope Francis had many times already addressed his thoughts to the Pope emeritus, during his first appearance on the central Loggia, and then two personal calls: the night of his election and St. Joseph’s Day.
Thus, the dialogue had already started, even though the the personal, physical meeting had not yet taken place. Let us also remember that the retired Pope had already expressed his unconditional reverence and obedience to his successor at his farewell meeting with the Cardinals, February 28, and certainly in this [morning’s] meeting - which was a moment of profound and elevated communion –will have had the opportunity to renew this act of reverence and obedience to his successor, and certainly Pope Francis renewed his gratitude and that of the whole Church for Pope Benedict’s ministry during his pontificate”.
Fr. Lombardi excluded the possibility of Pope Francis and Benedict XVI appearing at the balconey together to greet the public.

It was nice to see that Pope Francis is constantly reminding us of the importance of his “Brother Pope” Benedict XVI the “Emeritus” Despite the AP writer Nicole Winfield (who took Benedict’s words on condoms out of context” there are not 2 reigning Pops there is only one Pope Francis. And Benedict already has had his own ring destroyed and no longer wears red shoes. There is no doubt the Pope Emeritus may follow what Francis does but I am certain he will in no way try to interfere with Pope Francis’s program of governance. He may give the Pope his advice and opinion on things but he will stay in prayer. Nicole compared the two Popes and said Benedict is “frail” compared to Francis, well yeah he is 85 years old and has problems that’s why he decided to retire. Its nice to see them together
It was nice to see the two “humble” Popes together as “Brothers” It is the first time we have seen the Pope Emeritus since he greeted people from the balcony on February 28. It was also nice to see how well they get along with each other.
Like Peter meeting with Paul…except for the arguments over circumcision and associating with Gentiles! :-)
Two great men, doing something beautiful for God!
Ever since Benedict XVI announced his resignation, I have been wondering how this meeting would turn out. God bless and keep them both.
But I have to confess — and I hope this isn’t wrong — the photographs of the two of them together made me think of a caption: ‘Welcome to the Vatican — Two Popes — No Waiting.’

Our Church has certainly been blessed with two terrific and holy men.

Thank you Jesus.
I read something from another commentator. He pointed out that the Holy Icon of Our Lady was given as a gift to Pope Francis from a Patriarch from the Eastern Church, Pope Francis gave it as a gift to Benedict XVl. Looking at the spiritual aspect, the Eastern Patriarch, Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVl,in relation to the Holy Icon shows that Our Most Holy Mother is watching over the Holy Church of Her Son. I consider this a great sign for the future of the Church.
@Traditio, we better hope the Patriarch does not take offense at the regifting ;-) As if any additional slight is needed to continue the schism dragging on!
The two of one business goes too far.
RE, Emeryville, CA, I thought of the Patriarch taking offense. I just hope he see’s the spiritual reflection that others have observed in this gesture from Pope Francis. I hope this gesture is truly a sign from heaven. Lets pray for the reunification of East and West. As Bl. John Paul ll said, “So that the Church may breathe with both lungs”.
Holy, Beautiful, GRACE OF GOD working in their lives…..I love our Popes….Thank YOU LORD GOD!!!!!!
So wonderful to see together the two humble, good, and faithful servants of GOD and His Church!
