I am so disappointed.
As much as I dislike The View (and I could never have a television on at that time in my house anyway) I have always found consolation in the show’s inclusion of Elisabeth Hasselbeck as one of its hosts. That was because I had confidence in Hasslebeck’s opposition to legal abortion and support of traditional marriage.
That was silly of me.
It turns out that Hasselbeck actually supports both gay marriage and legal abortion.
Interviewer: What are some common misperceptions about you?
Hasselbeck: Oh, gosh, there are so many…. [Also] I am not ultra-ultra-conservative on every issue. I actually support gay marriage.
Interviewer: That may be an opinion that would surprise people.
Hasselbeck: I think the gay marriage thing would definitely surprise people…. I am a person that does believe that life begins at conception, but I also don’t believe that the government should tell women what to do with their bodies. So I’m torn there in terms of supporting laws [for or against abortion]. I always say I would rather change a heart than a law. I think it has to start there. Always trying to mandate, mandate, mandate this or that is not the way that I believe this country should run.
This is nothing new, of course. I feel like I could be reading the words of any number of “personally opposed, but” politicians on the topic of legalized abortion.
I think pro-life activist Jill Stanek put it well when she repsonded:
“I’m glad Hasselbeck agrees with basic science – Biology 101 – that life begins at conception. Thus, aborting that life is nothing other than murder. Does Hasselbeck agree that 2-yr-olds are living humans – but she doesn’t want to interfere with another’s right to kill them? This is no different. Too bad.”
And at Creative Minority Report, Matt Archbold observed:
“I can’t stand when people say that when it comes to abortion they’d rather change a heart than the law. I always wonder, can’t we do both?”
Yes, indeed, we can do both. It’s just that The View can’t do both. I am beginning to think that the show is aptly named, as only One View is shared by its hosts. Though I once thought the show’s producers kept a “token conservative” on board with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, it appears that is not the case at all. Even she is publicly falling in line with The View—the one “acceptable” view of pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.
For a refreshing alternative, we can take a look at Rachel Campos Duffy’s (mother of six!) appearance on The View last year, in which she reminded us of Mother Teresa’s warning that we would never have world peace until we ended abortion.
Now here’s a Different View. A courageous and correct one, too.

I don’t know who Nora is or who Steve is, but I do know that this ‘blog made James Taranto’s “Best of the Web Today”! Granted, it was in the “Questions Nobody is Asking” section (don’t take it personally, most of the stories that show up there are totally legit.. it’s just the whole “Question as a Headline” thing that Taranto doesn’t like). I should be so successful as to ever have anything I write picked up by him!
Hey Victor, that is way cool! I am honored to be singled out at the WSJ, even if it’s only for the distinction of having a dorky headline. :-)
It is a great accomplishment! I read Taranto every day and agree with him around 83% of the time—your victor agreement rate (VAR), if you’re curious, is slightly higher: approaching 2-sigma—but 100% of the time, he’s good for a chuckle!
I only know of “The View” from comments made here and there over the years. I’ve caught pieces of it on-line when the subject matter deserved but don’t consider it a real source of information. Having said that, I am not surprised she’s a societal milquetoast. It is very easy to seem ‘conservative’ versus actually living out those ideals (pro-life, pro-family) and being brave enough to actually speak out on any of them, much less all of them. Walking the walk as they say.
And I wonder in what areas does she remains conservative? Guns? But, having ‘outed’ herself so to speak, will they get someone who is actually conservative as balance to their opinions? I doubt it.
I never watch The View but I am disappointed at Hasselbeck’s comments. Bravo to Rachel Campos Duffy for not being afraid to speak the truth!
And now you see why Rachel Campos Duffy will never have a regular spot on the Hagfest… I mean"The View”.
Editor: Why do people bother with these “losers”.Use the time to read and reflect on the thing that counts:THE BIBLE”.It tells me all I need to know
about Gay{?} marriage,abortion, and losers.
Great blog post and bravo, bravo to Rachel Campos Duffy for her clear and passionate position on life! Shame on Elisabeth Hasselbeck for yielding to peer pressure on life and marriage. Perhaps it’s more “sham” than “shame.”
How anyone can say they believe that life begins at conception and then say a woman can do whatever she wants, I’ts her body. Once a woman becomes pregnant it is no longer just her body. From the moment of conception she is sharing her body with new life. This in itself should make a woman realize that now there is a new little soul inside her. Society has become so selfish and me oriented that a woman cannot even carry a life to term and than if she no longer wants the child, there are many people and couples who are infertile that would be only too happy to have and cherish that child. Life is a gift, treat it as such.
Murder is a legal term. The law defines what constitutes murder. Currently abortion is not included in the definition of murder just as killing an enemy of war is not. Therefore, abortion is not murder.
And anyone who is against same sex unions and says they are “pro family” is a hypocrite.
Abortion is Murder.
Murder is killing.
The Killing of Innocents is Murder, irregardless of any laws of governments.
“Thou Shall Not Kill”. - a Commandment of God.
Although scientists all over the world have tried, they can find no evidence that homosexuality is biologically or gene related. This includes the US CDC.
Homosexuality is a “desire”, just as “beastiality”, “porn”, “poligamy” are all desires. None of these have anything to do with being a Family (no matter what US Judges may or may not say).
Homosexual Acts are disordered.
For those who believe in God, read: Gen 19:1-29; Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10.
In addition, Catholics should read the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” (2357-2359)
Anne: “The Killing of Innocents is Murder, irregardless of any laws of governments.”
Let me guess… you eat meat? And your comment about no evidence of a gay gene is false. Good try though.
Have you ever expressed an opinion regarding late term abortion as it applied to situations like Rick Santorum and wife’s decision to induce labor all the while knowing that the fetus would not survive? And that he clearly said that they chose this decision because they favored his wife’s life above all? I see so many fervent Catholics supporting Santorum due to his anti-abortion stance BUT when you look into his situation, he himself is guilty of the most aggregious type of abortion which is late term abortion.
In Ireland, a non-Catholic woman died because she was refused an abortion to save her life. Her situation was EXACTLY the same as Rick Santorum’s was. He is a hypocrite and people who hold him up as an idea haven’t deeply investigated what he and his wife did.
