The bishop’s statement came after Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced the repurposing of the state Work Ethic Camp in McCook to house immigrants in the country illegally.
Bishop Conley, meanwhile, called on the university ‘to do more than ignore such a vile display of hatred.’
Listeners of Spirit Catholic Radio sparked an initiative to place billboards along Interstate 80.
The 60-year-old bishop will be installed in Omaha’s Cathedral of St. Cecilia on May 7.
On Election Day, Cornhusker voters also approved medical marijuana and rejected a measure that would have expanded abortion, instead approving one that restricts abortion after roughly 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Nebraska’s pro-abortion measure also creates a right to abortion after the baby is viable outside the womb 'when needed to protect the life or health of the pregnant patient, without interference from the state or its political subdivisions.'
The pro-life referendum would allow the current law to stay in place. However, the pro-abortion referendum would substantially expand abortion. Nebraska is one of 10 states where abortion will be on the ballot this fall.
Although the law remains in effect, Nebraskans will vote on a referendum on Nov. 5, which would establish a constitutional right to abortion in the state Constitution.
