On Saturday, Sept. 30, Pope Francis will create 21 new cardinals at a consistory in Rome.
COMMENTARY: While some of the appointments were expected there were also some surprises, as has been customary during his papacy.
With this consistory, Pope Francis has ‘armored’ the College of Cardinals for several years with red hats appointed by him.
The 63-year-old received the title of cardinal while being treated in the Roman hospital.

197 cardinals participated in the extraordinary consistory, the first of its kind in seven years.
Vatican watchers know that the meetings are dedicated to discussing the new constitution of the Roman Curia, Praedicate evangelium.
COMMENTARY: With the creation of Cardinal Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão, there will be five Indian cardinal electors, a sign of the rising importance of the Church in India.
Cardinal Baawobr also serves as a member of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, a post he has held since July 2020.
