In a message for the Church’s Feb. 8 World Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking, the Pope warns that conflict and inequality fuel exploitation.
The bishop asked parishes to collaborate with diocesan programs that are working to combat human trafficking and to place an emphasis on education, the utilization of social media, and activities that are geared toward youth training.
García pointed out the importance of banning surrogacy, a practice in which several Latin American countries have become the center of operations in recent years.
The U.S. bishops’ conference drew attention to the global crisis in a statement for the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking.
The report also noted that there is not a sufficient system in place to respond to fears that a minor’s sponsor is not fit to assume custody of the child.

The bishops of the United States have urged Congress to pass a bill aiming to combat human trafficking that would, among other things, provide grants to aid organizations in areas with high rates of trafficking.
A week of activities has been planned in Rome Feb. 2-8 to raise awareness of this evil and commit to combating it around the world.
