Castel Gandolfo, located 15 miles from Rome on the shores of Lake Albano, has historically been the site of the papal residence during the summer.
COMMENTARY: Thirty years ago, a seminar and papal Mass helped shape a priestly vocation.
The Pontiff spent a period of rest — July 6–22 — in the Italian town about 15 miles from Rome on the shores of Lake Albano.
After spending time praying in the chapel, the Holy Father personally greeted approximately 20 elderly people, all between the ages of 80 and 101.
Before concluding the audience, the Holy Father expressed his hope to meet the group again 'in a few months' for an 'ecumenical commemoration' to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea.
Reflecting on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, the Pope called for a ‘revolution of love.’ This Sunday was the first time in 12 years that a pope has led the Marian prayer from the lakeside town.
Pope Leo will continue to deliver his weekly Angelus addresses from Liberty Square (Piazza della Libertà) in front of the pontifical palace on July 13 and on July 20.
The Pontiff will stay on the hilltop Vatican property from the afternoon of July 6 to the afternoon of July 20. Part of the papal presence in Castel Gandolfo is the opportunity to pray the Sunday Angelus with Leo.
