Save Our Buffalo Churches, which has advocated against church-closure proposals, shared the news in a Dec. 8 Facebook post.
The prelate met with members of the Dicastery for the Clergy — including prefect Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik — during a trip to the Vatican in October, he wrote in the letter.
The parishioners had argued that the diocese should await the Vatican’s ruling on a diocesan merger plan before requiring the parishes to pay the highest-level payment rate into the settlement.
The complicated case stems from a group of parishes who object to the diocese’s requirement that they pay huge portions of cash into the diocese’s $150-million clergy-abuse settlement even as they wait for the Vatican to hear their appeal concerning a diocesan merger plan.
A fact sheet available on the diocesan website says that nearly half — 49% — of parishes in the diocese have seen a decline in registered households, while 60% of parishioners are over the age of 60.
The diocese said it purchased its headquarters building in 1985.
