Why Our Lady of Mount Carmel Gave Us the Brown Scapular

ROSARY & ART: On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception this year, let us focus on two important Marian sacramentals: the Miraculous Medal and the Brown Scapular.
Upon hearing the Blessed Mother’s call during a retreat, Father Daniel Steiner Ebert has since enrolled and vested more than 300 people.
According to tradition, the scapular, as it is now known, was given by the Virgin Mary herself to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251.
The procession was part of a Roman tradition that dates back nearly 500 years.
Founded in 1790, the Mount Carmel Monastery was the first Catholic convent for religious women in the U.S.
The connection between the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Rosary and Our Lady of Fatima is crucial for our spiritual life and growth.
“Those who wear the Scapular are brought into the land of Carmel,” said Pope St. John Paul II, “so that they may ‘eat its fruits and its good things.’”
July 16, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, would be a good time to begin wearing the Brown Scapular again – or to be enrolled in it.
