COMMENTARY:The brutal murder of Bishop David O’Connell has aggravated the episcopal shortfall in the largest diocese in the US.
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is mourning the loss of Bishop David O’Connell, who was shot and killed two weeks ago. He has been remembered as a shepherd who ‘knew the smell of his sheep’ and who tirelessly served the community. In a message from Pope Francis read aloud at the beginning of Mass by Archbishop Gomez, the Holy Father commended Bishop O’Connell, 69, for his efforts to uphold the sanctity of life and his profound concern for the poor.
Bishop O’Connell’s funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 3, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Bishop O’Connell was murdered on Saturday in his Hacienda Heights home.
‘As Catholics around Los Angeles and the nation start the holy season of Lent, let us reflect on Bishop O’Connell’s life of service and dedication to those in greatest need of our care,’ said the District Attorney. ‘Charging Mr. Medina will never repair the tremendous harm that was caused by this callous act, but it does take us one step closer to accountability.’
