SearchCOMMENTARY: The McCarrick Report has many words but, in the end, speaks with no one’s voice and seems addressed to no one in particular, yet what Catholics crave from this ordeal is personal accountability.
COMMENTARY: A system becomes vicious when it lays a veneer of virtue over vice. And our public life is getting more vicious by the day.
COMMENTARY: His baptism being invalid, so too were his confirmation and his ordination and many sacraments he administered. This situation strikes to the very core of what the sacraments are, and what the Church is.
COMMENTARY: Giving the impression that politics trumps Church teaching sends a message about what Catholics should put first — a message Joe Biden and others have already taken to heart.
COMMENTARY: Bishops may not wish to be ‘politicians or culture warriors,’ but they are required to speak with clarity on what is and is not acceptable for a Catholic to do, say and believe.
COMMENTARY: Given the ex-cardinal has been assigned the canonical penalty of a life of “prayer and penance,” it is hard to escape the impression that he has begun a sentence for crimes committed yet there has been no trial or other penal process announced.
