There is a blind man in China who made a mess. A big one. And the most powerful people in the world are doing everything they can to make it go away or just ignore it.
Chen Guancheng is a blind human rights activist who has protested his country's forced abortions and sterilizations. After months of beatings at the hands of his guards, Chen pretended to be sick and laid up in bed. He and his wife studied the movements of the guards, according to ABC News. In the middle of the night, Guancheng slipped past nearly 100 guards stationed around his home and escaped into the night.
This would seem like a near perfect ending to a Hollywood movie accompanied with soaring music and rolling credits as Guancheng reportedly made his way into the U.S. embassy in China.
But...
The United States Secretary of State was getting ready to board a plane for a high profile meeting with Chinese officials. And the blind human rights lawyer makes that meeting a little...awkward.
China doesn't yet even want to acknowledge Guancheng escaped. And the U.S. doesn't want to upset China.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in the hours before the meeting with China declined to speak directly about Guancheng and only said the U.S. sought an “effective, constructive, comprehensive relationship” with China.
She refused to elaborate.
President Obama also declined to comment on the Chen case Monday.
In 2009, while the blind man suffered in prison, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying that any discussion of human rights with China "can't interfere with the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crises,"
Hey, you've got to have priorities.
Vice President Joe Biden said of China's human rights abuses last year, "You have no safety net. Your policy has been one which I fully understand -- I'm not second-guessing -- of one child per family."
President Obama is in the midst of a struggle to force religious institutions to act against their conscience by forcing abortifacients.
So you could see why this might be a little awkward for all involved.
In a video message to Premier Wen Jiabao just last week, Chen called on the Chinese leader to protect his family. "If you continue to ignore this and do nothing, what will the people think?" Chen said.
Yes. What will people think about those who ignore this?
Let's all pray for a hopeful resolution.

Now let’s see - Chen actively resists the brutality of the Chinese Government. And it seems that the Bishops now have a spine against the HHS mandate. There is a real parallel here between the Chinese and US government in imposing death on their populace. If BO supports Chen, then they are saying their (BO’s) policy is wrong also. Thank you to a real hero - thank you Chen. And may God give you peace.
Reggie LittleJohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers has been working tirelessly for a long time to get the word out about Chen. She has been traveling the country in the last few months fighting to get the word out and working with Chinese activists to educate people about the horrific practices of the Chinese government and the plight of Chen’s family. Keep writing about this. Go to Reggie’s site and watch the videos and share them. She is the kind of woman I want my daughter’s to emulate. God bless all the people involved who are literally willing to give their lives so that the Chinese people may be free!
Okay, so let me get this straight…Chen opposes his country’s one child policy and forced sterilizations. So he seeks asylum from the USA. The good old USA, the same country whose brand new health care law is based on the same principles as the Chinese govt: limited access to medicine depending on age and usefulness; public mandates for contraceptive medicine; euthanasia; population control. Reasonable, isn’t it? Chen has more problems than blindness.
Exactly.
Our blindness as a nation for voting for Obama is more severe than Chen’s. We need to examine our own consciences when we back governments like China because we have spent ourselves into dependency on them.
The Hat Lady et,al…Chen is NOT seeking asylum in the US. As Matt wrote he is asking his leaders for help. I’m glad that people are picking up on the great irony in all this, “what will people think”? And as Dave points out above, BO’s policys are looking very similar to China’s so perhaps Chen see’s that as afterall.
They (the liberal democrat fools) will say that the difference between the US and China is that in China, the abortions are forced while in the US they are voluntary, for the best interests of the society as a whole, the mother and unwanted (and now dead) kids, liberating, a constitutionally protected right, wonderful, glorious, etc., etc. The fools will say this makes all the difference in the world. You know the drill.
In the Chicago north suburban paper,The Daily Herald, they have had a big spread on the second page about this story. HOWEVER, he is referred to as an activist against government abuses. NEVER ONCE IS FORCED ABORTION, STERILIZATION, OR THE ONE-CHILD POLICY MENTIONED.
Yes, Chen is an inspiration to stand against evil regardless of the consequences for oneself. He shows up the extreme evil of the “One Child Policy” and its “implementation”. The Western Media is now censoring the fact that he is a prolife activist, just as they have been censoring the news of the ongoing atrocities and organised barbarity of China’s communist regime for many years. It is an egregious breach of the NL and Judeo-Christian principles upon which the U.S. and many other Western States were founded.
The Universal Declaration on Human Rights of the United Nations states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
Obama introduced the Universal Declaration on Human Rights as the Law of the Land in three different speeches recorded on video, omitting “their Creator” but interposing “inalienable rights” in the place of “unalienable rights” as those endowed to man upon being born.
Chen reminds all of us what Communism is about. Straight up tyranny. We have a president and his party actively working 24/7 to “TRANSFORM” our country into a Communist country. Chen is a reminder of what we can expect if that day arrives.
I don’t see how BO’s policies are looking similar to China’s. There is a difference between forced abortion, sterilization, and a one-child policy and BO’s policy that allows women the freedom to choose whether or not they want to use contraceptives, have an abortion, or have any number of children they like. This freedom is what differentiates the U.S. from communist countries.
