Bishop José Ignacio Munilla explained that “since there were many complaints, the reference was later qualified. The logos have been removed, and the qualification was made that we adhere to Agenda 2030 ‘as it is interpreted according to the Catholic Church.’”
Pope Francis sent the video message on Jan. 20, fewer than 200 days before World Youth Day (WYD) 2023 in Portugal’s capital city Aug. 1-6.
Pope Francis has released his message ahead of the international event next year, imploring young people across the globe to join him in Lisbon, Portugal. Mary is the model who shows how to bring Christ to the world, he reminded youth.
The Pope said in the interview that next year’s World Youth Day presents a great opportunity ‘for the youth from different parts of the world to connect.’
The new patrons of the upcoming Lisbon, Portugal, gathering were unveiled on May 18, the anniversary of the Polish Pope’s birth.
Many faithful, especially in Brazil, remember the image of Nathan de Brito hugging the Holy Father.
This year, WYD will be celebrated at the diocesan level on the Solemnity of Christ the King with the theme “Arise! I make you a witness of what you have seen,” inspired by Jesus’ words to St. Paul recorded in Acts 26:16.
Pope Francis announced last November that these local youth celebrations should take place on the Solemnity of Christ the King starting in 2021. They had formerly been held on Palm Sunday.
The theme of World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2023 is “Mary arose and went with haste.”
