According to a statement from the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family, and Life, the Holy Father wanted to highlight the hope of the elderly in the final stage of their lives.

The Vatican released the message ahead of the fourth World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, which takes place on July 28 this year, in which the Pope said: ‘Let us show our tender love for the grandparents and the elderly members of our families.’
The day is also an opportunity for the whole Church to prepare for the upcoming jubilee year of 2025.
Happy Grandparents’ Day! May you be blessed with boundless love for your grandchildren as you strive to help lead them to eternal happiness in heaven.
The special day is held on the Sunday closest to the July 26 feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
Pope Francis will preside over a special Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to mark the grandparents’ day and has invited parishes, dioceses, associations, and communities around the world to celebrate the day ‘in their own pastoral context.’
