The bill was originally set to defund Planned Parenthood for a 10-year period. The Senate on Tuesday passed the reworked bill after a tiebreaking vote cast by Vice President JD Vance.
The new bill is in the earliest stage of the legislation process.
In a statement released by the bishops’ conference, Bishop Robert Barron and Bishop David O’Connell called the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act ‘commonsense legislation that would ensure fairness for female athletes.’
Republicans held on to all of the Senate seats they controlled heading into Election Day, guaranteeing that the party will have at least 52 seats and Democrats will have no more than 48.
The legislation did not include any exemptions for insurance plans provided by employers who have religious or other moral objections to IVF, such as the Catholic Church.
The bills passed the Senate in an overwhelming 91-3 vote on July 30.
