The grant money would have supported job training and education programs based in West Virginia for students of The College of St. Joseph the Worker, which is based in Steubenville, Ohio, and offers a bachelor’s degree in Catholic studies along with the trade lessons.
The College of St. Joseph the Worker, an Ohio-based Catholic college, received a $5-million grant to develop a construction company to employ students, provide job training and education opportunities, and create a pro-life public-policy research center in the northern part of the Mountain State.
The new trade college in Steubenville, Ohio, integrates Catholic studies with hands-on training in skilled trades, promoting both intellectual and physical craftsmanship.
Based in Steubenville, Ohio, our college pairs a Bachelor of Arts in Catholic Studies with training in a skilled trade (carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical). The college’s unique curriculum delves deeply into the Catholic intellectual tradition.
The past few years have seen a rise of interest among Catholics in such vocational academies and trade schools. Michigan-based Harmel Academy led the way.
Students at the school will be taught the trades by master craftsmen and small business owners who also possess an understanding and love of the liberal arts, said Alex Renn, vice president of operations.
