After liturgical disputes in India nearly led to a schism in 2025, the Syro-Malabar community came together July 9–12 in Chicago to honor its 25th year as an official eparchy in the U.S.
Calling for at least one synodal Mass to be celebrated in each of the parishes on Sundays and other obligatory days, the plan allows the continuation of the existing liturgy facing the people.
Bishop Thattil’s election comes amid an ongoing bitter dispute over a decision by Church leaders to institute a uniform liturgy.
After several eparchies failed to abide by the mandate, the Pope issued an ultimatum in a Dec. 7 video message calling on the Church to adopt the ad orientem liturgy approved by the synod by Dec. 25.
Despite fierce opposition from most of his own archdiocesan priests, including his metropolitan vicar, the head of India’s Syro-Malabar Church celebrated Palm Sunday Mass facing the altar for part of the liturgy.
