Cardinal DiNardo’s Oct. 7 statement was a response to the Vatican’s announcement that it would review its files pertaining to allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of Archbishop McCarrick, who has been accused in recent months of serially sexually abusing two teenage boys, and of sexually coercing and assaulting priests and seminarians during decades of ministry as a bishop.

The cancellation comes after a week in which Cardinal Wuerl has faced heavy criticism for the way he managed priests who had been accused of sexual assault during his tenure as bishop of Pittsburgh, from 1988 to 2006.
The Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors met in October to continue its work on norms and procedures to protect children and vulnerable adults from sexual abuse.
