In a wide-ranging pastoral letter, the cardinal addressed the highly divisive conflict and its spiritual undercurrents, proposing a response based on the prophetic vision of the new Jerusalem.
During the interview, the Italian cardinal also addressed the situation in Gaza. noting that it 'hasn't changed much' because, although there is no longer a war, 'there are still targeted bombings.'
Upon their entrance into Gaza, Pope Leo XIV called Cardinal Pizzaballa to 'offer his support, closeness, and prayers' for the ecclesiastical delegation and the people left shaken by the Israeli attack.
Beyond the food crisis, the cardinal emphasized the need to 'face the other two great urgent needs of the population,' which are education and health, including for the Christian community.
When asked what Christians can do outside the Holy Land, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa responded: ‘Pray and support.’
Cardinal Pizzaballa also reminded his audience in the missive that the Church celebrates the feast of Mary, Queen of the Rosary, on Oct. 7.
In his message to the gathering, the Pope urged attendees to take an active role in the Church’s mission.
The cardinal stressed that the Israel-Hamas conflict is not just an issue for the local Church but also an issue for the universal Church.
Just a few minutes after speaking with the patriarch, news arrived of a bombing that grazed the Latin parish of the Holy Family in Gaza, causing some damage, but thankfully no casualties.
