The grants and scholarships support a variety of efforts, including many construction and renovation projects for schools, churches, seminaries, hospitals, pastoral centers, and orphanages in the developing world.
In this April 27 interview, executives Eustace Mita and David Savage say the organization has put behind it the controversy over its decision to rescue a scandal-ridden Italian hospital.
The Holy Father expressed gratitude in a meeting at the Vatican on Thursday.
Eustace Mita, president of The Papal Foundation’s Board of Trustees, said that Pope Francis’ visit to the Middle East and his call to rebuild Catholic buildings in the region, as well as his message of a unified Christian community, influenced the work done by the foundation.
The disgraced former cardinal intervened in 2017 to pressure members of the U.S. Papal Foundation to support a controversial grant request.
Sources say a controversial U.S. grant was requested in order to balance the central bank's books after the hospital was unable to repay the money.
Boston prelate takes over from Cardinal Donald Wuerl, who served in the position for eight years.
According to foundation stewards who object, the $25-million grant is of unprecedented magnitude and departs from the foundation’s usual objectives; other members say the grant is consistent with the mission.
