The film’s death scene is enhanced by the glorious singing of the opera singers who play the nuns — but the glories of the life to come belong to these martyrs, who were willing to die for their Lord, their faith and their country.
They ascended the scaffold out of love for Christ. Within days of their sacrifice, the Reign of Terror came crashing down.
COMMENTARY: The wrongly imprisoned, like Cardinal George Pell, the Carmelite martyrs and Jimmy Lai, use the arts to raise their hearts to God, offering a certain interior freedom, even contact with the transcendent.
Before meeting her death, each sister knelt before their prioress who gave them permission to die. The prioress was the last to be executed, her hymn continuing until the blade fell.
The long-revered martyrs include 11 nuns, three lay sisters and two externs.
The Blessed Carmelites of Compiègne were guillotined on July 17, 1794.
