The Brazilian cardinal, a long-time proponent of ordaining married priests, told a Brazilian publication ‘this matter will have to be developed and completed’ through discussions with Pope Francis and Vatican officials.

Bishop Erwin Kräutler, understood to be the principal author of the synod’s working document, supports women’s ordination and also says he believes two-thirds of Amazonia’s bishops are in favor of ordaining married men to bring the Eucharist to remote areas without priests.
The new 64-page instrumentum laboris, which will form the basis of discussion at the Oct. 6-27 synod, focuses on themes such as inculturation, ‘ecological conversion’ and synodality.
Speaking aboard the papal plane from Panama to Rome, Francis said exception could only be considered for remote locales.
Prompted by the shortage of priests, some in the Church are considering opening up ordination to a larger pool of men to provide the Mass and sacraments.
