Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government is trying to secure Christian support, despite his party’s record of failing to protect Christians from violence in other Indian states.
‘His action violated the canon law, which prohibits priests from joining political parties without permission,’ Bishop John Nellikunnel said.
Dayal told CNA Sunday that it is not clear that the government is serious about pursuing cases of violence against Christians.

The bishop was charged in April 2019 with rape, unnatural sex, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation.
With the state crippled by the bloody ethnic conflict since May 3, extended curfews and internet shutdowns have paralyzed normal day-to-day life.
An estimated 160 people have died since the violence erupted in the northeastern Indian state on May 3.
While not critical of Modi’s visit, they question the sincerity of his outreach to the nation’s persecuted Christian minority.
