While some bishops consider it a source of scandal to allow those not in communion with Church teaching to receive the Eucharist, others argue that taking a hard line would “weaponize” or politicize the sacrament.
The Nov. 15-17 gathering in Baltimore will bring the bishops together for the first time since 2019.
Bishop O’Connell said he wished to refocus the conversation away from “who should be denied” the Eucharist, and toward “who should receive” the Eucharist.
Archbishop Gomez said the proposed document will focus on “the beauty and power of the Eucharist.”
