A Pittsburgh native, Bishop Zubik spent his entire priestly and episcopal career in the diocese, which serves nearly 628,000 Catholics in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania.

After word broke of the planned Pride Mass, a significant backlash erupted, culminating in Bishop Zubik’s letter, which was sent to priests, deacons, and seminarians of the diocese.
Bishop-elect Eckman said: “I only ever wanted to be a parish priest. I am also grateful to all the faithful in the assignments that I have had the privilege to serve.”
Despite the group’s explicit support for women’s ordination and blessings for same-sex relationships, Finch asserted that the group is in “good standing” with the Church.
Both Fr. Taylor and Fr. Hawkins said St. Benedict’s official designation as a personal parish will help the parish better evangelize the Hill District and the greater Pittsburgh area.
