COMMENTARY: This kind of ambiguity has been seen before, in the case of allowing divorced and remarried couples to receive Communion
ANALYSIS: In the eight days between his appointment to head the DDF and the announcement that he will be made a cardinal, he has had a lot to say — but his public comments have brought up as many questions as they’ve answered.
The appointment of a new prefect to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith with a ‘different’ mandate is not a repudiation of the importance of safeguarding the integrity of doctrine — not unless Pope Francis was repudiating himself.
COMMENTARY: Just as Pope John Paul II was happy to have his ministry judged by his choice of principal collaborator, so too Archbishop Fernández thinks that his appointment serves the same role for Pope Francis.
ANALYSIS: The Holy Father’s appointment of Archbishop Victor Fernandez to lead the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith was 10 years in the making.
The archbishop was reputedly involved in the drafting of ‘Evangelii Gaudium’ and ‘Amoris Laetitia.’
