During an in-flight press conference on Dec. 6, 2021, the Pope told journalists he had accepted Archbishop Aupetit’s resignation because the archbishop had “lost his reputation so publicly.”
Appointment was announced in a July 7 communiqué. The Vatican department oversees the process of selecting and appointing bishops.
