In a land long marked by reformation, suppression and the erasure of Catholic life, clergymen stand as powerful witnesses to a Church not merely surviving, but hopeful and unmistakably alive.
Stirring up racial hatred by threatening, abusive, or insulting behavior was already illegal under Scotland’s Public Order Act 1986, but the bill expands the law to other protected categories.
Catholic schools in Scotland are part of what is known as the state system of education — the equivalent of public schools in the U.S.
The incident occurred two days after a Catholic priest was attacked by a man wielding a glass bottle as he prayed at a cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.
The Catholic Parliamentary Office of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland said in 2019 that Catholics were “disproportionately targeted in terms of religiously aggravated offending.”
“The pope will be in Scotland for a very short time, most of which will be spent participating in the COP26 conference,” the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland spokesperson said July 12.
