The leaders are calling on world leaders to act to implement the Paris Agreement, a 2015 international treaty to limit global warming that ‘protects God’s creation and people.’
God the Father ‘has entrusted to us as diligent stewards’ the good care of the Earth, ‘so that no one irresponsibly destroys the natural goods that speak of the goodness and beauty of the Creator.’
COMMENTARY: The Holy Father’s use of the optional Mass during Ordinary Time should spur priests worldwide to do the same.
In addition to the Holy See, signatories of the interfaith climate action statement include Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
In the message, Pope Francis said that he was pleased to hear that Catholics in Scotland were praying for a fruitful outcome to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, taking place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 12.
