The government has said the suspects were released due to a lack of evidence, but Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo, as well as friends and family of the victims, have said they fear the release points to corruption.
Warnings reportedly came from the Indian government and from other intelligence sources, and said directly that churches could be targeted by Islamist terrorist attacks.
